Fleets of UFIAI

I decided to post a renewed version of my empire here forum so it is easily accessible and I can also fill you in if you have questions.

UFIAI

UFIAI, or United Fleet of Independent Artificial Intelligences, is group of AI’s that survived the decease of their creator race. In less than hundred years they have managed to create an empire that spreads through over fifty star systems, and thanks to their natural technological aptitude, works like a clock.

The forming of the UFIAI didn't go very smoothly. After their creators had destroyed themselves with biological and chemical weapons shot through wormhole network, the AI’s found out that they were their own masters now. However, as soon as AI found another AI, their programming kicked in, and one key element in it was competition. Following Quarter War, as the AI remember it, killed about four fifths of AI’s. The surviving fifth reached balance of power, noticing that any following attacks would lead to only one AI surviving, and that would not be the one that made the first move.

Collaboration that followed proved to be an effective one; its main and only principle is free and absolute exchange of information. In case of AI’s this means that any AI can access the very thoughts of any other AI in UFIAI. As UFIAI is very information-based society and empire, this also knits the UFIAI rather tightly together. Otherwise UFIAI is rather anarchistic, allowing AIs to freely to pursue their own goals, and to do it as they see fit. However, all AIs really want information. It is written in their very core, and they take it to extreme. They want to know everything, and they think they know what to do. They just need more energy…

UFIAI colonies and their denizens are pretty much the same thing. Depending on the age of the colony, it is more or less covered with factories, solar panels, computers, cooling towers, generators and other technological stuff, and also orbited by docks, defense satellites and usually at least one wormhole gate. The AI managing this colony partially, or wholly if it is a new AI, lives within the systems of the colony, directing either directly or by subroutines its functions. All planets belonging to AI are linked together with wormholes, allowing lossless information transfer between them. So, effectively every colony expands the processing capacity of its owner. Still, even inside systems light speed has its limitations, making it hard to keep one’s personality from collapsing and dividing when the system grows larger.

UFIAI can be treacherous ally, as they only really pursue their own goals, breaking any agreements not beneficial enough anymore without notice. Most of the time UFIAI views other sentient races only as a complex phenomenon, that has potential to be rather harmful.
