The Karthla are a species of destructive, ravenous abominations known to plague a large portion of the known galaxy. They are feared by thousands of empires, both living and dead. Their reputation hatches primarily from their skill in wiping out entire races with such incredible ease. The Karthla are also known for their mastery over their own bodies and their infamous ability to feed off of the living of the galaxy in order to reproduce. The Karthla are, for the majority, mindless and animalistic. However their design and biological capabilities make up for their lack of intelligence and allow them a very good fighting chance against rival races with superior intellect and technology.

The Karthla are complicated creatures who took the galaxy's scientists aback, giving them quite a shock. It has been extremely hard to observe the Karthla, since they are so incredibly hard to contain. But what is known about them has confused scientists everywhere. So much so that an entirely new Animal Domain is used to describe them. Domain Karthalia.

Many scientists have theorized that the Karthla are a unique product of evolution, being a strange combination of each animal phylum combined. The Karthla show characteristics of arthropods, crustaceans, cephalopods, echinoderms, annelids, etc. One would think their strange mix of body styles would make it hard for the Karthla to function, however each body structure works with one another in complete harmony, showing the majesty of nature.

The Karthla are usually invertebrates with many special organs. Their skin is often black and/or purple, sometimes brownish or gray depending upon the bodily location. Their skin is often smooth and thin, made specifically for fast-movements and escapes. However, in more combat-made classes of subspecies, their skin is extremely tough and can even resist an average bullet. Often times their combat classes develop shells or exoskeletons in order to protect their bodies from enemies. These exoskeletons may change shape and structure rapidly to compensate for the Karthla's unique body-changing abilities. Most Karthla are capable of sprouting extra limbs and appendages. Most notably, fast-whipping tendrils with needle or spiked ends. They also are famous for growing spikes, feelers, teeth, claws, and other weapons effectively used in combat. The Karthla also are capable of mimicking another race's technology by creating flesh molds in various spots along their bodies, designed to work like a gun or other technological weapon. Bullets are projected, hardened and melded from biotic materials within the Karthla's body. Some materials are produced, others are taken from the flesh, blood, bodily acids, and other recyclable structures. Karthla also secrete acid, oils, and flammable substances from glands throughout their bodies.

Evolution & Classification

Karthla, ultimately, can change themselves according to their environment in a matter of days. All Karthla are converted from other species and lifeforms. After conversion is complete, the life form will transform into what is considered a "Larval" Karthla, or a Neonate, which is the very basic class. It usually still resembles its past race somewhat, which gives it a sense of outward individuality. However, in time, as it eats and consumes and absorbs more energy, it will evolve into other forms of Karthla. Ultimately the path it takes depends on its environment, job, and the prey it is after. There are four general pathways a Karthla can evolve through: Terrestrial, Aquatic, Empyrean, and Heliacal.

The Terrestrial path is the first, and by far the most common. It encompasses all Karthla who walk upon dry ground, without any kind of wings or aquatic powers. These Karthla are the most numerous and most capable hunters. They also tend to be more intelligent than the other classes.

The next pathway is the Aquatic path, which is composed of all water-dwelling Karthla. These Karthla are made with gills and fins and other characteristics needed to operate in a submerged environment. These are some of the fastest of the Karthla, and some may spread onto shores and beaches. They are created through completing repeated tasks in submerged environments.

The next path is Empyrean. The Empyrean path involves all Karthla of the air and sky. Any Karthla which is winged and capable of flight within a planet is an Empyrean Karthla. These Karthla are some of the fastest and are known for coming in large swarms and raids. They are created through a Neonate that develops gliding capabilities. These abilities later transform into flight, and eventually a new path is found.

The final path is Heliacal, which generalizes all space-traveling Karthla.  They are generally the largest as far as body shape goes. They are designed to move Karthla from planet to planet and are often transporting small seedlings of World Eaters and Hives. They will drop the World Eaters onto planets and allow them to spread. Some of these Heliacal Karthla are designed only to transport the Karthla themselves and will develop storage sacks and other appendages for protecting the Karthla and delivering them. These deliverers are made of special materials and elements, and have many layers of skin that is resistant to much of the harsh effects of space. During space travel they may appear as a meteor or other kind of rock or shell. This is because their true body and all the things they carry is wrapped up inside, protected by the outer shell as other kinds of protected steering body parts are used for movement and travel through space.

The first step from Neonate to one of these classes is the Group stage. A Karthla must evolve into one of the following groups. All paths have the same groups, although their classes are much different. The group merely describes their overall role in the hordes. The class is the identifying name that truly defines them.

A Neonate will first transform into one of four groups: the Scions, the Behemoths, the Bantams, and the Vassals. An additional group exists outside of these four, but cannot normally be reached by the same means. This group, the Luminaries, are made through different means (explained later). Each group is extremely diverse, but can each be summarized by their variety of jobs. They are each extremely important to the Karthla hordes as an entirety.

The Scions are the most diverse of these four. This particular sect possesses more classes than any of the others. This is because it takes more effort to become one of the others, whereas the Scions are created from basic combat and predatory jobs being applied to their bodies. Their bodies may be completely different from class to class. They are essentially the foot soldiers and infantry of the Karthla forces.

The Behemoths are essentially giant beasts with immense strength, power, abilities, and other unique characteristics. They are found most commonly on the battlefield and are famous for being hard to kill. Soldiers universally agree that the Behemoths are the most dangerous Karthla and can cause vast destruction wherever they go. Behemoths are often made when a Neonate consumes more food than it is able to handle, and therefore its body metamorphoses into a form that is able to. This is why the most common Behemoth is the Gorger, which consumes things whole and breaks them down with razors, acids, muscular movement, and other forces, within their bodies. Behemoths are vast and take on many, many forms. Some take on more worm-like appearances and burrow, while others may appear more arachnid-like. Behemoths sometimes even appear as simple masses of tendrils and spikes, designed to kill as much as possible.

Bantam Karthla are the opposite of Behemoths in terms of size. They are usually very small and are used for specialized tasks such as stealth. They appear in many forms, although commonly are incredibly primal. While some are more like miniature Scions, most appear as almost canine creatures, used for sniffing out or locating prey, as well as burrowing, latching onto prey, torture, stealth, poisoning, swarming, etc. Bantam Karthla do not survive long away from their horde. They are created by performing some of the specialized tasks that Bantams are used for.

The Vassal Karthla are those who serve their World Eater. Every Karthla kingdom possess Vassal groups, since these are Karthla who tend to the hives and the World Eaters. They are the "worker bees" of the Karthla and ensure that nothing goes wrong. Without these Karthla, there would be zero chances of a hive maintaining itself and keeping the hordes thriving on a planet. The Vassals are not often equipped for combat, but do possess some combat skills and defensive mechanisms. They have a talent for camouflage, a bit like certain classes of Scions. Some Vassals are incredibly large and were at one point considered Behemoths. In this same way, Vassals are composed of Karthla which may very well fit into the other classes, biologically speaking. However, due to the tasks they perform, they are separated into the Vassal group. Vassals are created by a lack of combat exposure and a path of jobs directed at the hives or World Eaters.

The Luminary, or Overseers Karthla have become some of the most feared Karthla, aside from the Behemoths. They are the commanders and overseers of the entire Karthla operation. There are varying classes of them as well, however each is given certain responsibilities and authorities over the hordes. They are highly intelligent as opposed to the other Karthla and are capable of controlling Karthla telepathically, via sending pulses and signals to a subordinate's brain or ganglion, stimulating and triggering various parts of it much in a puppeteer manner. This controls a Karthla, even if it is not physically or mentally prepared to take on what the Luminary is telling it to do. The most famous among the Luminary are a class called the Overlords, which are capable of speaking and thinking. Their intelligence is still on a primitive level, but they are capable of understanding other races after watching closely and learning their language for an extended amount of time. They have virtually eidetic memories, learning languages in extremely short periods of time, or simply mimicking them. The Luminary are the only class known to be created by means other than life conversion. The Luminary will often be birthed in a hive or World Eater, generated to lead it intelligently and to maintain it. However, Luminary can be sculpted from other lifeforms. However this is usually only done by a former Luminary implanting its own seed, or its conscience, into another organism. The Luminary can evolve to fit in with each pathway and to help their hordes and fight in combat alongside them.

After a Karthla has evolved into a specific group and class, it may continue further down its path by establishing a breed. By doing this it develops characteristics that may help it do its various jobs better. Most of these characteristics go along the lines of extra biotic weaponry, different kinds of body parts, etc. They remain a part of their class, but become more individual by adding more things to their bodies. Usually these additions depend upon their environment, and use them to adapt. After this has been reached, the Karthla has reached it's breed.

An example of a fully developed Karthla is the Cliff-Dwelling Gorger (or Nithora Maghoul). It is obviously a Behemoth (indicated by the class name "Gorger") and a Terrestrial Karthla (indicated by "Cliff-Dwelling). The words "Cliff-Dwelling" can help determine it's breed by implying that the Gorger has developed extra traits and characteristics that help it in the cliff-dwelling and climbing process. By doing this it has made itself renown for crawling about cliffs.

The Luminaries are an elite group of leading alpha Karthla that are spawned within Hives attached to World Eaters. They are the rarest of all Karthla. The Luminaries are very intelligent and powerful and act as the overseers of the hordes. Their primary objective is the complete and total assimilation of a planet into the Karthla image. They seek to kill everything that they cannot manage to convert. Although their intelligence does not compare to a modern sentient lifeform, a Luminary is still very smart. Their memories are nearly photographic and unfading, allowing them to learn things with lightning speed. They are capable of learning languages and developing the necessary organs and brain cells to speak, sometimes very fluently.

Among the Luminaries are many classes, although the most famous is the Overlord class. Overlords are the highest rank of Karthla aside from Servex (explained later). They are created when the Hive and World Eater are planted on the surface of a planet and grow as the Hive grows. They are generally pre-made, the materials needed to make their bodies come with each Hive seedling that leaves a world that has been converted and eaten successfully and completely. In this way the Overlord's body materials are assembled when the Hive first lands. It springs to life and begins its bond with its hive, creating and converting and hoping to eventually assimilate the entire planet. Some Hives come with multiple Overlords, depending usually on the size of the Hive itself. However, each Hive has at least one.

Above the Overlords, there is only one higher ranking of Karthla: the Servex. The Servex is not made with each Hive, as the Overlords are. There is only one known Servex in existence, which is more intelligent than all other Karthla and possesses the same brain power as any normal sentient life form. The Servex, thought to only exist in legends and rumors, is a very real threat to foreign empires. The Servex acts as the universal leader of the Karthla, or "emperor" if the Karthla were considered an empire. It is unknown how long Servex live, or how to kill one. The only thing that is known about them is that their first and only known member is an alleged "female" Karthla, despite their species being genderless. It is believed that upon the development of the brain cells which gave the Servex the power of sentience and intellectuality, it assumed a gender as part of its climb along the evolutionary tree. This Servex was named Edus, stemming from the Ordauth word "Edulusi", which was a translation of the Maltran word, "Ragnessa", which means "demon".

It is known that Edus has existed for millenias due to her depiction and naming in many Maltran archives regarding the Karthla. It is theorized and heatedly debated that she may have caused the fall of the Maltroid Empire, and by extension, the rise of the Nemaseul.

Each Karthla, upon conversion, is given the ability to reproduce. The Karthla reproduce by injecting an elixir of anomalous genetic material into prey. This elixir is usually black with a strange purple or red gloss to it. It is said to contain a strange virus dubbed "Karthis", or, in Confederacy classification, "K-D99". There generally is not much known about the viruses and anomalies inside the elixir, only that once injected, they will begin to mutate and change the host physically and mentally, in a very drastic way. In the end the host will transform into a Neonate, and will begin their career as a Karthla. The transformation process can usually last from one to two days. Although in some cases, such as during very harsh or cold weather, this process can be spread out over weeks. Also, the larger and more complex the body of the host is, the longer it will take.

Upon injection, the host will immediately be hazed and numbed. The elixir will quite instantly create fatigue and loss of willpower in the host. Their body will spontaneously bleed and let off foul odors that are designed to warn ravenous Karthla not to kill or eat them. Usually this odor is only detected by the Karthla themselves, but in severe cases it can become so potent that it is overwhelming for other creatures to smell. After five hours from injection, the host will have minor hallucinations, confusion, dizziness, severe migraine and/or head pain, eye pain, and other mental and physical complications. Eventually this will increase until the host has major hallucinations and delusions and may act out violently and harm itself or something/someone else. An hour later the host will experience seizures and partial to full blindness as their eyeballs are covered in a thick film during a transformation process. Burning sensations in the eyes will occur to the point the host may go as far as to try to gouge them out, if able. Eventual numbing will reduce this pain significantly, but not completely.

Three hours later the host will begin to vomit enormous amounts of blood as the elixir takes over and causes the heart to change and create a new kind of blood. During the heart transformation, the host will often undergo cardiac arrest, or even die. As Karthla blood flows through the body, accompanied by the transformative elixir, the body will gradually change into that of the Karthla image. Blood vomit will cease as the bone structure of the creature will change in a very painful and torturous way. Although the bones will not move and shift in such a way as to kill the creature, but will gradually move safely and in a way calculated by the elixir as it works throughout the body. The skin of the host will begin to thicken rapidly as to prevent any bones from breaking and piercing the skin. A "shell" or "cocoon" of strange gray and black hard material will form. This is the last the host has seen of their natural body.

Inside the cocoon, the host remains perfectly conscious and awake while the rest of their body shifts and changes. It is incredibly painful as new organs develop and others are destroyed within them. It is theorized that hosts will continue to hallucinate even in this state. Screaming can often be heard coming from within the shell. It will continue until a period of forced sleep, which comes approximately twelve hours after injection. Several hours of transformation will occur until finally the host is sprung away with a new body. They will vomit a plethora of acids that will dissolve the shell enough for the host to crawl out. The films in their eyes will have vanished and they will be capable of new visual powers. Their entire body will be new and it will take getting used to. However, the Karthla are fast learners and are capable of mastering their bodies very quickly.

World Eaters & Hives

World Eaters and Hives are some of the most feared things about the Karthla. They are essentially both dependent on the other and must work together for the assimilation of a planet.

A Hive, in essence, acts as a house, home, or base for the Karthla. The Hive itself starts as a seedling itself, a sphere of packaged materials. It is carried from one planet to another by means of a Heliacal Karthla, who will place it wherever it sees fit on the surface of a planet. Once planted, its sensors and feelers will spread and attempt to detect any life or means of living. Normally a Heliacal Karthla will only drop them off on planets filled with life, although there are occasions when the space-traveling Karthla must land somewhere near very soon. Once the seedling has detected life, and no known threats, it will hatch and quickly build up the Hive. The Hive will assemble its Overlord, who will drain small inklings of life from nearby animals and plants. This will give the Hive enough power to hatch the World Eater, which will slowly burrow into the planet's crust, spread, and consume it. This will feed the Hive.

The Overlord will work to spread the Karthla infection around to any nearby life and will often kill the Heliacal Karthla used to drop the Hive off and recycle its body through the World Eater's array of Body Recycling pods. These pods are used to take bodies of fallen Karthla and turn them into new Karthla, usually starting them back at Neonates. Although sometimes they can be reborn back at the class level. As the Overlord recycles the body of the Heliacal, it will generate a group of Karthla that will start down a different path. These Karthla will go out as Carriers, spreading the infection to any creatures they may find. Eventually more numbers of Karthla will report back to the Hive. Some of these will become Vassals and will cause the Hive to grow more healthily and steadily, with more power and ability than is possible without them. A Hive can only survive for a very short amount of time without Vassals. The Hive itself cannot grow without Vassals, even despite the World Eater feeding it materials and feeding itself. Without the Hive, the World Eater will be unable to function on its own without coordination and strategic command, and will die.

The Karthla began not as a single cell or by any natural means. In fact, the Karthla's origin was one of unnatural fashion. It is generally unknown to empires how the came to be, but there are some deep archives which no one has discovered which detail their roots. The Karthla are universally accepted as one of the oldest races in the galaxy, with their evolutionary evidence traced by experts who study them.

They began long ago with the Black Millennium, a thousand-year war between the Ordauth Theocratic Union and the Maltroid State. For generations the two had experienced harsh relations with one another, as well as many smaller-scale wars. However the Maltroid's introduction of Metapoisoning, and the Ordauthian copy of the weapon, sparked what can only be described as a massive widespread epidemic of death and chaos. Metapoisoning was a process in which a planet's inhabitants were mutated with a variety of chemical bombs.
