Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Something Old, Something New - IC

Bright halos of light broke the darkness of space for a moment, and were then swiftly discarded by the deactivation of seven vessels' slipspace drives. They had arrived near their destination, silent in the void but still moving with purpose. The long, stalk-like ships started in unison towards the coordinates that each shared, seeking their prize.

On the bridge of the lead vessel, the crew paused in their duties for a moment to offer their recognition of the Fleetmaster, who had just entered. He nodded in response, and proceeded to his seat at the head of the bridge. His chair, leg-less and held aloft by an irregular adjustment in the ship's artificial gravity, was surrounded by holographic displays waiting for his analysis.

Logov Zhastev, Fleetmaster in charge of this operation, set the displays aside for a moment. He had been swept along on this task so quickly that he was left little time to consider the reasons for his assignment; he wondered how many more missions he would be sent on with minimal intel. Find an old Chimerosu vessel and recover its inhabitants, if any remained. This effort was supposedly made in the name of diplomacy between the newly-formed United Chimerosu Nations, and the Imperial Coalition, the legitimacy of which Logov doubted. He wondered how anyone had obtained enough information to pinpoint the location of this old Krylonian ship, especially because of its disappearance decades ago. Unfortunately, the answers to his questions remained elusive.

The Chimerosu ship, when they came upon it, was, as vessels from their empire had always been described, a work of beauty. Though visibly dented from collisions with debris that drifted through the empty void of space, its deep, navy-blue exterior possessed a shine like cut glass, and faint, delicate patterns traced over its still form, flickering white with remnants of power that had somehow, miraculously, managed to remain throughout the passage of time. At the ship's front was a gigantic window that shone like a mirror, a brilliant sapphire hexagon that was the hallmark of any ship from the old Krylonian Empire, and even now, something that had been adopted by the newly-established UCN.

Needless to say, they had found their vessel, but what was inside, they would not know until they investigated further.

The entire yields of three plants had been stolen, the very day that Kaakri was supposed to harvest them.

It might have seemed so small to anyone else, three plants? Why worry over three plants? There was plenty of food, correct?

Of course, for Kaakri and the other Chimerosu stranded in space, stealing all of the vegetables from three plants was actually a very, very serious crime. This was because, unlike a normal ship that could go to a planet and gather new supplies, everyone aboard the Baquona's Heart had to rely exclusively on whatever was already in storage (The original foods had already been wiped out, save for sweets that they saved for the anniversary of their loss of mobility). Because the vessel was immobile, the only source of new food that anyone had was the aerophonic gardens, which Kaakri's family maintained. With limited space, all the things they required were grown in one area, and were guarded jealously. All food was rationed out according to each person's individual needs, and any circumstance that affected this were serious.

Kaakri, who had hatched on the vessel, had never known any life other than roaming the passageways of the ship, and guarding and growing the narrow selection of vegetables needed for survival. The elders, those who had come from Krylon, would often describe the homeworld to him, but the vast expanse of space they mentioned, from fields of blue grass to a gigantic thing called the 'sky' were beyond him. He had never seen these things, and in truth, he was so attached to the things he tended that any space that he found too cluttered or filled with people caused a fit of anxiety. Kaakri, at the age of nineteen, was the first chick to hatch aboard the Baquona's Heart, and he was more comfortable in the white, glaringly-lit rooms of the gardens that otherwise filled others with a terrible, gnawing sense of loneliness and longing for Krylon.

"Hahaha...so delightful, isn't it? People don't get how idiotic they really are? Do they think I don't know how to catch them? I live for this! Filthy thieves, ungrateful, they never have enough! We feed them what they need, nobody is starving, but now, they shall pay with their manes and wings! Unforgivable! Unforgivable! How dare they attempt to cheat me like this!"

He ranted inside his head, the thoughts bordering on lunacy. He was well-known on the ship, not only because he was a gardener, but also, because his temper was very short, and even though he was rather small, he was strong, and when crossed, was also particularly violent. Seemingly absent triggers could make Kaakri collapse into a fit of tears, and then immediately after, fly into a rage. He was a dangerous person to anger, because even though he did not seem threatening in appearance, he could rip larger, older Chimerosu apart with ease, having no restraint once he'd been set off.

Of course, while this would be concerning to many, and the term 'crazy' or 'insane' was easily applied to him, most of the ship's residents did nothing to curb or cure his behavior. This was because the problem was the ship itself, and the fact that Kaakri had been deprived of so many things needed to keep the mind from warping. The glaring white walls in the garden room, meant to increase lighting given to the plants, deprived the senses, and Kaakri seemed to have a particular dislike of people, so socializing was rare.

The main reason that Kaakri was allowed to remain the gardener was for various key purposes. The first, because Kaakri was extremely good at what he did, and secondly, because despite his aggressive behavior, he rarely came around others, and generally kept to himself and the aerophonic rooms.

The primary purpose of keeping Kaakri around, above all, was because he was an excellent guard.

No thief that took food while Kaakri watched over the gardens had ever escaped him.

A System battlecruiser, specifically the one known as 4-1994/4, had arrived in system on a routine survey and reconaissance mission to explore the surrounding space to the systems colonized by the System. All was going normally, until of course it had detected the unknown vessel drifting. Within milliseconds, a variety of sensor arrays focused on it like eyes, attempting to discern as much information about it as possible. The oddest part about it was the apparent lack of engines, as there was no telltale high energy signature from a reaction drive nor any other signs of propulsion. 4-1994/4 raised its shields fully as a precautionary measure, and adjusted its course for the unknown vessel.

The moment people saw Kaakri appear in the main chamber of the living quarters where most of the Chimerosu aside from the doctors and gardeners lived, they hurriedly began flying back to their individual rooms, not wanting to catch his attention. It went without saying that everyone from elders to young chicks knew to avoid Kaakri when he was hunting down a thief, lest he be given a reason to think he'd caught them, or that they were trying to protect the culprit. By staying in their rooms in once place, it sent the message that they were not trying to run away from him or stand in his way, and that they were open to interrogation, should he decide to go knocking on their door. As long as he was not needlessly provoked, Kaakri was unlikely to attack someone that he believed to be innocent, and it was because of this small amount of self-control that he was not identified as a criminal and forced into a prison cell.

Kaakri himself did not even know the warnings that everyone taught the chicks, and in truth, his knowledge of what happened in the community, or even what it was like to be social, was practically nonexistent. He spent almost all of his time in the aerophonics rooms, even taking naps there, rather than returning to be with his family in the farmer's quarters adjacent to the cultivation area. Because of this, his only contact with others was during major meetings, when he was seeking out thieves, or on the few occasions when someone went to notify him of incidences that would require different rations, such as newly-hatched chicks or females carrying eggs. Kaakri did not have any real friends, and trying to interact with him in a friendly manner was discouraged. His ferocious temper and tendency to remain alone suggested he was not interested in seeking companions, and additionally, the slightest mistake might have severe consequences, as he was extremely sensitive to perceived offenses, and did not even understand the most basic norms of Chimerosu society.

Most elders had already claimed, should the Empire ever find the Baquona's Heart, Kaakri needed to be isolated from the community and given mental help, as his behavior was only beneficial when there was no other regulatory power in place, and he was liable to be agitated by the sights and sounds of the homeworld alone.

...Of course, for every community that shuns one particular deviant, there is also the one individual that stubbornly tries to interact with that said deviant, even if it's extremely dangerous to do so.

"Hey! Kaakri! It's been awhile, how come you never visit? I said you could. Please? Please come over sometime! It's gotta be quiet over in the aerophonics room, don't you want to talk to someone once in awhile?"

Kaakri instinctively tensed up as he heard his name being called.

"Sweet Creator...." he growled under his breath, "does it ever end?"

No sooner than he had uttered that statement did the source of the voice that endlessly seemed to grate on his nerves bounded up to him, oblivious to the fact that Kaakri was visiting in search of a food thief.

"Heya! What'cha doin'?" The question came from directly behind him.

'Grubblons! Why do I have to deal with this guy?' Kaakri turned around to face the nuisance that had approached him.

Standing before Kaakri was another Chimerosu who was of roughly the same exact size, both of them being extremely small, but with decent, muscular builds. The difference was that Kaakri was two years older, and that, while Kaakri's feathers were extremely dark, with a rare red tinge to his stripes, the person he was facing had feathers that were so pale they almost seemed grey, with only the faintest hint of any markings whatsoever.

Right now, this person was staring at him with the kind of starry-eyed ignorance that filled Kaakri with an odd combination of disgust and curiosity.

Perhaps that was why Kaakri had only ever gotten as far as verbal threats, and had never actually done anything to harm this guy.

"I'm busy, Kiicreen." Kaakri growled, stepping to go around the annoying young doctor's apprentice so that he could proceed with investigating the thief who had stolen from his gardens. "I don't have time to talk right now." He added.

"Busy with what?" Kiikreen pressed, proceeding to follow him.

'Oh....goodness, now he's following me?' Kaakri thought with dismay.

"Thieves. Stole the yields of three whole plants I was supposed to harvest today." He explained shortly, hastening his strides. "Cryin' shame for them, and for the neighbor's new chick. That was part of their rations."

"For them, the thieves? Why?"

"Are you an idiot? I'm going to rip them apart when I find them!" Kaakri snapped.

"...Woah...calm down...y-you don't have to beat them up!"

"No, but how are they going to learn their lesson if they only get a slap on the wrist?"

"W-well, I'm not saying that they shouldn't be punished...but...err...don't you...hate it? I mean...everyone's running away from you, and..."

"Honestly, I don't care. I don't enjoy it, no, but that doesn't mean it particularly bothers me, either. I'm just doing my job, and if I have to be the so-called 'bad guy' because I make sure people don't steal our precious, sole sources of food, well, who am I to judge?!"

In this circumstance, Kiicreen was only succeeding in worsening Kaakri's anger.

Kiicreen actually knew, fully-well, that Kaakri was an extremely dangerous person to be around. Despite this, though, he figured, even if Kaakri actively avoided socializing, he probably needed to have someone to talk to, even if he said he didn't want that. Even in the circumstance that Kaakri's twisted personality never really got any better, he still needed someone around to act as a moral compass. Not only this, but as many times as Kiicreen had been lectured by everyone about putting himself in harm's way, Kaakri had never actually inflicted any sort of physical harm. The young teen took it as a kind of confirmation that, at least on some level, Kaakri was willing to tolerate his presence, and didn't exactly want to hurt him, even if he kept saying that he would.

Not only this, but as many times as Kaakri had rejected the adolescent's ideas, it still looked like it had some sort of impact.

At least to some extent, Kaakri would hold back when Kiicreen was there.

This madness, of course, both Kaakri's anger and Kiicreen's attempt to pacify his rage, were both interrupted by the sudden, jarring jolt that shook the entire vessel.

Both of them stopped.

"...Err....what was that...?" Kiicreen asked, heart beating faster than normal.

"Hm....meteorite? Big one...used to hit us all the time." Kaakri waved his hand dismissively.

<UNKNOWN VESSEL SUCCESSFULLY CAPTURED WITH TRACTOR BEAM. NEGATING VELOCITY...

...
...
VESSEL RANGE AT 1 KILOMETER
PREPARING BOARDING PARTY...
PARTY PREPARED AND LOADED
TACTICAL TRANSPORT LAUNCHED
WEAPONRY ON STANDBY
SHIELDS AT 100%>

After taking note of the fact that the vessel was essentially drifting through the system, and having received no replies via comms, 4-1994/4 had elected to capture the vessel and board it to investigate, especially after having detected that the at least part of the vessel's temperature was not the cold one would expect of an abandoned craft, but rather was warm enough for life to inhabit.
The jolt that the passengers had felt was the battlecruiser's tractor beam rapidly bringing them to a halt, and reeling them close to the warship so that it could more easily board them.
Once they had been brought to within 1 kilometer, close enough that it became very apparent how much 4-1994/4 dwarfed the Chimerosu ship, a tactical transport carrying a boarding pod was dispatched over to the the dark, silent hull.
The craft zoomed over the short distance to the ship and slowly moved around the hull, looking for an airlock, whereupon finally finding one, it maneuvered the boarding pod into position. Once it had been optimally placed, the pod's boarding attachment configured itself and attached to the airlock, creating a seal between the two craft. Once this was done, plasma cutting torches on the interior began attempting to cut through the door.
Meanwhile, some distance back from the torches doing their work was the System boarding party, composed of two teams of five infantry units, for a total of ten. They held their forearm guns at the ready, prepared for hostiles inside the unknown ship.

As the Jorro'kil vessels moved further in-system, they noticed that they were not alone. A rather large spacecraft showed up on-screen in sight of all the commanders in the seven ships. The laser scanners from the Jorro'kil ships revealed that this craft was of completely unknown origin; nothing in their database matched the design. After the initial analysis was completed, a few of the commanders, including the Fleetmaster himself, noticed another large structure in tow of the alien vessel.  This finding was immediately brought to the attention of all of them, and another scan was authorized for this object.

They had found the Krylonian vessel, and it was now unfortunately in the hands of an unknown entity.

Logov stared at the conjoined vessels for a moment. Were these aliens seeking the Chimerosu ship on purpose, or had they stumbled upon it?

"Hail that vessel," Logov ordered. The crew obeyed, and the appropriate hail was sent to the System battlecruiser, in several Loccalian dialects.

While he waited for a response to the hail, Logov ordered that an enhanced image be produced of the Chimerosu craft, for his viewing specifically. The image appeared accordingly on his holo-screen, and an exclamatory statement from one of the crew worked in tandem with the Fleetmaster's realization.

"Vai, boarding crafts locked onto the Krylonian ship!"

This suspicious activity from the alien vessel, while still ambiguous concerning intent, irritated the Fleetmaster. If there were any survivors aboard the Chimerosu ship, he would not tolerate their falling into the hands of a potential threat.

<7 UNKNOWN VESSELS ENTERING SYSTEM
UNKNOWN VESSEL ATTEMPTING COMMUNICATION
RECIEVING MESSAGE. ATTEMPTING TO TRANSLATE...
UNABLE TO TRANSLATE. INSUFFICIENT DATA ON LANGUAGE
COMPOSING UNIVERSAL MATHEMATICAL MESSAGE. TRANSMITTING...>

4-1994/4 took notice of the seven new vessels entering the system, taking note of their alien design. This garnered its interest, especially after the message being broadcast by the newcomers was unable to be translated due to a lack of knowledge on the Jorro'kil language. In response, the battlecruiser encoded a message in universal mathematical operators and sent it back the the alien ships, which read "Greetings unknown vessels, please identify yourselves".

--

The boarding pod on the Chimerosu ship continued cutting until it had broken through the door. Whatever atmosphere that was beyond it would be allowed to flow into and normalize with the lack of atmosphere inside the craft, and then the boarding teams advanced forward.

Whoever these xenoforms were, they apparently did not communicate in Loccalian, either out of necessity or dislike. Logov noticed that the response to his hail was surprising in multiple ways, considering every known race in the galaxy of Ravena at least had the capacity to speak in some dialect of Loccalian. Add to this language anomaly the completely unknown design of the alien ships, and it created a trend towards a potentially inconvenient idea.

This alien ship could belong to a completely new empire in Ravena.  The Fleetmaster decided to order standard greeting message sent in the same mathematical language that the Jorro'kil fleet received, identifying the people and the empire from whence his vessels originated, as well as the Confederate Nations of Ravena.

With this done, Fleetmaster Zhastev sat and waited, all the while becoming increasingly agitated concerning the boarding pods attached to the Krylonian ship.

4-1994/4 reviewed the data that had been sent with interest as it automatically transmitted the new data back into the System servers in their territory. It also sent a reply back to the Jorro'kil vessels reading "Greetings Imperial Coalition vessels, I am unit 4-1994/4 of the System. We are pleased to meet you. What is your purpose within this system?"

--

The boarding teams continued deeper into the Chimerosu vessel, mapping their path and checking it against the data scans of the ship that 4-1994/4 had done. This way, they began navigating their way towards the living quarters towards the rear of the ship in which the potential life signs had been detected.

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

Post by curius Thu Aug 18, 2016 7:31 pm

Dozen light minutes away a quick flash of a warp drive disengaging appeared. An aged cargo ship had jumped in. It was unremarcable, about half a mile long with long box-shaped front and some old markings of an obscure company. Only thing that stood out was the array of antennas and sensor-dishes stiking out from its middle part between the engines and front cargo-area. The sensors were clearly and earlier addition and actually fairly new.

The ships only passenger, an AI known by the name Vendor, checked the surrounding space with  its passive sensors. The coordinates were 99.26 percent correct, which was satisfactory accuracy with such second-hand jump-drive, but the fleet Vendor had been tailing had left trails from their sub-light drives, so they had been here for some time already. This was disapointing. Apparently the old civilian jump-drive was not able to keep up with military grade even when over-clocked to redline.

Vendor analyzed the scans and deduced that it had not been that late afterall. The Jorro'kil fleet had not yet made a contact with the drifting hulk. Wait, the hulks course was anomalous, and there were traces from propulsion near it. It was not supposed to have active engines. Vendor focused its passive sensors and qickly noticed the large ship near the hulk. It didn't resemble any known ship types of any known empires. None of its parts were of familiar desing.

After a quick though, Vendor decided to make couple active scans of the are with its active sub-space sensors. The detailed scan showed that there was power and activity at the Krylonian ship, also some small ships latched on it, similar on desing to the unknown ship. Both the unknown ship and Jorro'kil fleet had their shields fully up, preventing detailed long-range scans. With the Jorro'kil ships speeding on their shields combat ready the situation did look tense.

Vendor weighted the situation. Original plan was to shadow the Jorro'kil fleet  from afar, collecting information through them about the Krylonian ship. However, with the Unidentified ship now apparently boarding the Krylonian ship, this situation might need direct contact. Vendor was wery reluctant to blow its cover, but there was also one thing more. Although only superficial, the scans of the Unknown ship were showing some interesting results. The ships desing seemed to lack many features almost universal to space ships, usually linked to logistics. To Vendor the ship seemed a bit like car without any doors.

After careful consideration Vendor decided to short-jump closer. After all, the active scans would probably bee noticed anyway, and since UFIAI was now allied with Jorro'kil the risks were acceptable. Vendor wented some spare coolant through the jump drive to cool it enough for a short jump and engaged.

The cargo ship disappeared and appeared a second later within a comfortable communication distance to all of the ships, bit closer to the Jorro'kil ones though. From this distance it became apparent that the Unknown ship lacked the external features of life support or living quarters. Vendor rated the probability of the unknown ship being controlled by an ai being over seventy-five percent.

"Fleetmaster Logov Zhastev, I in behalf of the UFIAI  I greet you. I am known by the name Vendor, can I be of service?" Vendor greet the Jorro'kil fleet while simultaneously monitorin the alien craft. It decided to not yet contact the ship itself, wanting  to first find out what the Jorro'kil know.

Post by Whos Sat Aug 20, 2016 7:48 pm

Unexpectedness becomes this mission, the Fleetmaster thought.

First a completely unknown entity is found cradling the vessel that Logov had been sent to procure, and now, for reasons he could only imagine, a UFIAI ship was in-system and communicating with his fleet.

Moments passed as Logov analyzed the situation. The entity in possession of the previously unidentified space craft was clearly an artificial intelligence. Now, with a UFIAI personality present, Logov wondered if perhaps the two ships had some relation. Wasting no time, the Fleetmaster ordered that a search be made in Confederate databanks for all registered factions of the UFIAI. Could "the System" be some unknown splinter group of the UFIAI?

At the same time, Logov personally prepared his responses to both entities, and had said responses delivered to their respective recipients.

To the System, Logov informed them that his fleet was seeking to investigate the floating, derelict vessel, and to this "Vendor," the Fleetmaster enquired of its reason for being near the Jorro'kil fleet.

At the original appearance of Vendor's ship, 4-1994/4 immediately began attempting to scan the cargo ship, attempting to gather as much data from it as it could, including radiation spectra from its drives, permeability of its hull, identifiable external weapon mounts, etc. All the gathered data was carefully evaluated and recorded, before being transmitted back to the System's control servers back home, exactly as was done in every encounter the System had. This process was also repeated after Vendor's ship executed the microjump to move closer. A message was crafted in the same mathematical logic language used with the Coalition fleet, and sent to the new ship. "Greetings unknown vessel, please identify yourself"
In response to Logov, a separate reply was sent in the same format as before "Your mission is noted, we are investigating this ship for salvage, and possibly rendering assistance to possible beings onboard. We would be happy to share our results with you, depending on what we find"

--

The ten infantry units moved through the derelict's passageways, now entering a storage area for small craft, which they scanned with their various sensors. Once this was complete, the moved on, finally arriving at the door to the living quarters and the area in which the habitable area signs had been detected by 4-1994/4. One of them attempted to activate the door, while the others backed up several feet and took defensive positions, bringing both forearm weapons to bear on the door in case of encountering hostiles.

When the Fleetmaster's message arrived Vendor already had its responce ready. It just made the fev adjustments and waited a bit so the responce would not seem too quick. "Sir Fleetmaster, the UFIAI received knowledge of the Krylonian ship. A ship of a race the UFIAI has regrettably only second-hand knowledge. UFIAI was not aware of any military missions regarding the ship, but recognizing the possibility we decided to send the least conspicuous wessel. This is strictly scientific mission."

The mathematic message did surprise the Vendor a bit but was soon translated and responded in a dozen seconds: "The entity controlling the ship you contacted responds to name Vendor, and affiliates with faction known as united fleets of independent artificial intelligence, or UFIAI. Would you now in turn indentify yourself and your affiliations?"

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

Post by ViperaUnion Sun Aug 28, 2016 8:43 pm

“Uh….I don’t think that was a meteorite, Kaakri, don’t you think that sounded…err…kind of weird? Plus, there’s been weird echoes coming down from below since…”

After the initial thud of something connecting with the Baquona’s  Heart’s hull, Kaakri had dismissed the sound, and had persisted in ferociously banging on doors in the various corridors of the ship’s living quarters, demanding to know if the residents of each chamber knew anything about the food thieves, and if so, who they were, where they were hiding, and whoever was an accomplice. Meanwhile, Kiicreen had been following anxiously behind, his optimism fading, both from the suspicion that what had collided with the vessel wasn’t a meteorite, and from the fact that nothing he did was capable of lessening Kaakri’s seemingly endless anger. By the time anything would have entered into the main gathering chamber of the living quarters, the pair would have already vanished, only their voices being audible, now, echoing down the otherwise-deserted halls. While Kaakri sought out the thieves, Kiicreen followed uneasily behind, offering weak apologies to the Chimerosu that were frightened by the farmer’s interrogation.

Such as it was that Kiicreen was the only voice of reason that had ever dared to enter into Kaakri’s life and not suffer for it.

Kiicreen had actually never seen a thief take food before, and if some incident like this had occurred before, he was probably too young and ignorant to realize that even back when he was little, Kaakri was vicious when it came to defending the food supply. He knew that it had occurred in the past, and he was extremely conscious of what would happen to the offender, though. He had only ever been the doctor’s son, and later, an apprentice under his father, working to learn the practice of medicine, something that had to be carefully-preserved, as once the trade of being a doctor died out on the ship, there would be no way of getting new medical personnel. Kiicreen had been isolated as a chick, but when he was old enough to begin helping his father out in the clinic, he began seeing a very specific pattern to the kinds of problems that Chimerosu appeared with.

When he became an apprentice, Kiicreen had thought, from his research, that the primary cases he’d receive and have to treat would be illnesses that resulted from being trapped in confined spaces, or accidental injuries, but what he discovered, more prominently, was that many Chimerosu came with injuries that resulted from fighting. Bite wounds, deep gashes left by sharp horns, and feathers brutally ripped from the skin. Whenever Kiicreen asked who had inflicted the injuries, every patient had given the same name: Kaakri, the farmer’s son. Not only this, but when Kiicreen expressed shock, the patients would be surprised that Kiicreen didn’t know who Kaakri was. They would constantly talk about a Chimerosu who was small, stocky, and muscular, just like Kiicreen’s own build, with dark feathers and reddish stripes. They’d talk about the violent farmer who wandered the aerophonic’s rooms, without warning attacking whoever entered without first notifying him that they were there.

The incidents kept happening as Kiicreen learned more and more about the trade of medicine. People would steal food, or enter the aerophonic’s rooms without telling someone, and then they would come to the clinic, so beaten that they desperately needed attention to prevent shattered bones from healing wrong, or scarring that would mar their bodies for life. Although it made sense to Kiicreen that food thieves would be punished—stealing food was, no matter what, a major crime in a place where there was only one source—he could not ignore the severity of those injuries. When Kaakri punished someone by beating them, he didn’t just do it sufficiently to make them learn the consequences; he went overboard to the point that he left them almost permanently mutilated, were it not for the fact that good doctors were present. The fact that this kind of behavior occurred was not only an indicator of possible mental illness, but also, if someone wasn’t there to hold Kaakri back, he might truly kill someone one day.

Eventually, Kiicreen had made up his mind to go and personally investigate Kaakri himself, possibly to see if there wasn’t some way he could potentially curb Kaakri’s aggression, or at the very least, explain to him that there was a certain point where he needed to stop.

Unfortunately, that first meeting hadn’t happened how Kiicreen had expected it to, nor did it end in a way that he really wanted it to.

There had been a day where Kiicreen’s father had needed to go and get something from the aerophonics rooms, some sort of pharmaceutical plant that he needed extracts from in order to synthesize certain chemicals. Kiicreen had gone with him, since that seemed like the fastest way to encounter the farmer’s son in the first place, and it had already been established beforehand that the doctor would be arriving that day. It was important that if Kiicreen went there that he didn’t show up uninvited, lest he be mistaken for a thief and be attacked himself. All that needed to be done to avoid such a fate was to simply go and stay with his father, and hopefully, it would just go without saying, the apprentice was tagging along to learn what kind of plant made X kind of medicine. The only problem was that while Kiicreen wanted to talk to Kaakri, his father warned him that Kaakri would merely look the two over to see that they were who they said they were, and then probably leave and go off somewhere else, being something of a recluse.

When the day came and Kiicreen arrived with his father at the aerophonics room entrance, it had seemed like a promising situation at first. The older farmer, Kaakri’s father, came out to greet Kiicreen’s dad, and the two started up a conversation, laughing like old friends. Meanwhile, a smaller, younger Chimerosu, who Kiicreen was able to identify as Kaakri immediately, thanks to the descriptions his patients had given him, sat by a growing bed further away, tying complex knots with a piece of string he’d gotten from somewhere. Kiicreen took the opportunity to go over and talk to him while their parents were distracted. He’d walked over and stood by quietly, until Kaakri noticed his presence.

“Eh? You got something to say, doc?” Kiicreen remembered that question vividly, the way Kaakri had asked it so casually, perfectly relaxed, and a shocking contrast to what everyone else had described. “It’s weird if you just stand there and stare all day. Haven’t you seen a guy practice tying knots before?”

The fact that Kaakri spoke first, and had done so with such a calm demeanor had caught Kiicreen completely off-guard. When everyone else had described the farmer’s son, they’d described a person that, when they weren’t beating someone within an inch of their life, was hot-tempered, childish, and quick to act based on their emotions. What Kiicreen saw didn’t seem to match up, although it was clearly Kaakri that he was talking to. The farmer didn’t have any other sons that were so small, or possessed reddish stripes. Kaakri seemed anything but hot-headed, from what Kiicreen’s first impression was.

Kiicreen also remembered how he despaired over his startled response to Kaakri’s question, “Ah, Hi….I’m Kiicreen, the Dr. Ghrii’s son, you’re ah…Kaakri, right?” He then remembered wanting to curse, for how uncertain and off-balanced he had looked in that moment. Already, whatever pre-formulated concept he’d had for how the conversation and introductions would go was completely gone.

“Yeah…everyone knows who I am, buddy. I’m amazed you aren’t nervous that I’m here.” Kaakri replied, continuing to look at his knots as he tied them, undid them, and then tied a new one again that was different from the first.

Kiicreen remembered that he had felt nervousness creep into his belly by that point, maybe wondering if Kaakri wasn’t suspicious of him, for some reason.

“Let me tell you something, pal,” Kaakri continued, slowly rising up to his feet, not that he was any larger than Kiicreen was, “I’m the farmer’s son, and when I grow up, I’ll be a farmer, just like how you’ll be a doctor when you grow up. Protecting these plants is my job. I was born into it. I don’t know what you’ve been told about me, but from that look you’ve got on your face,”  Kaakri’s eyes had narrowed by that point, “They’ve been telling you I’m crazy. Now I don’t particularly care, but in case you’re so curious to know, people who come in here without telling me or my dad first? They’re up to no good. They’re probably dirty thieves. My job is to make sure nobody steals, so everyone gets their fair share. I don’t wreck who doesn’t have it coming first, got it? I just do a thankless job, and that’s it.” After staring at Kiicreen hard for a moment, Kaakri sat back down, going back to tying his knots.

Kiicreen remembered standing there frozen, for a moment, completely shocked, before it dawned on him that Kaakri had reasoned out that all the information he’d been getting was coming from Kaakri’s victims, the very people he beat up. It would only make sense that they’d want to get back at him by acting innocent, wouldn’t it? But at the same time, Kiicreen wasn’t entirely sure if every single person who Kaakri had attacked was truly and honestly there for the purpose of attempting to steal food. Some of the people were just far too nice to be that way. Kiicreen couldn’t picture some of the younger kids, or the elders, simply stealing food when they knew someone like Kaakri would attack them if they got caught.

The most Kiicreen could figure from this was that Kaakri, no matter how childish or ill-tempered he acted at those times, was still mature enough as an adult to see through someone’s actions, and that he was smart enough to suspect hidden motives. He supposed he had just jumped to conclusions, because a childish person would never be observant enough to think that maybe the sudden appearance of the doctor’s son had something to deal with the number of patients with injuries he sent their way?

Kiicreen had goofed up this entire meeting.

“Ah….well, people do talk….don’t they?” Kiicreen remembered replying nervously, trying to cover up his own mistake. “Well, ah…I wasn’t here to tell you that what you were doing was wrong…if anything, you’re doing a great job at keeping people from stealing.”

“Thanks for the support,” Kaakri had responded dryly at that, not too convinced of Kiicreen’s sincerity.

“Well, ah, the reason I came here was, well…when you do catch thieves, you beat them up. I’m not saying that’s wrong, but…well…the last guy’s wing was broken in three places. We almost didn’t manage to save it. He was close to never flying again…so…ah…I’m not saying to stop but…could you maybe….err….try to avoid breaking bones next time…?”

Kaakri had paused at that, and looked up at Kiicreen, his head tilted to the side, as if questioning what kind of game Kiicreen was playing at, before humming to himself in thought, “Well….let me think….starvation for all….or a single guy who can’t fly anymore….? I’m not the expert, here. I can’t tell whether or not the force in a punch is going to snap some dirty thief’s limbs or not. That’s your  department, bucko. The most I know is that if I punish someone, if it doesn’t hurt, I might as well just let them go without any penalty at all, free to try again.” He had shrugged at the thought, “Ah…well…I guess I can’t blame you for thinking I might know…I punch pretty hard.”

“Ah…well….I guess that makes sense…but….why do you bite them? I’ve seen bite marks and cuts from your horns, too.” Kiicreen had pressed the question.

Kaakri had just shrugged again at that, “People look down on using their beaks for anything other than talking or eating, but we all know that they can be used for more than that. Everyone wants to avoid using their beaks and horns…you know, it’s not ‘civilized’ apparently, to draw blood. But really, it’s not civilized to steal the sole source of food, either. It’s not even morally right. Plus, look at me, or even you for that matter. Neither of us is very big, right? You get pinned by someone bigger than you, you’re going to find yourself using the beak and horns. After that point, you’ve already done it once, your ‘dignity’ or ‘pride’ or whatever is already ruined, everyone already knows by then. There’s no reason to hold back. Why should I hold back? The people who steal food are threatening our survival.”

Kiicreen quickly found himself on the losing side of an argument. Then he thought maybe trying to get Kaakri to justify violence wasn’t how to solve this problem: Kaakri seemed to be proud of the fact that he’d hurt people, and it wasn’t even possible to stump him on the subject. He had a rational-sounding explanation for everything.

“Doesn’t it bother you that everyone’s afraid of you, though? I mean…isn’t it lonely? People keep saying you don’t even go home with your parents. You just sleep in the aerophonics rooms, right?”

At this question, Kaakri’s feathers bristled a little, and Kiicreen could tell that for whatever reason, this inquiry bothered him. “Does it bother me? I do a thankless job, buddy. People like me don’t make friends. When my parents go home, I watch the crops. Why else would I sleep in here?” Kaakri continued to talk casually, as if he were perfectly at ease, but realistically, Kiicreen could tell that he didn’t like the direction the conversation was turning in. What he was really trying to do was cover up the fact that Kaakri was actually a bit antisocial, and probably not comfortable with the concept of friendship or interaction.

“Well…I could be your friend...you know….You don’t have to sit out here in the aerophonics room by yourself. I could come visit, once in a while.” Kiicreen knew he had to be careful, otherwise Kaakri might realistically just get up and walk away. That seemed like something he’d do.

“Heh….well, sure, I guess it’d be nice…to have a new person around…but…well….how fast can you walk?” Kaakri quickly changed the topic.

“How fast can I walk?”

“Yeah, doc, how fast can you walk? Can you keep up with me? Patrolling the rooms isn’t something where you just stand there doing nothing all day. You think I normally get to sit down like this? My ma’s patrolling right now, so for the moment I’ve got a rare break from it. You wanna walk with me whenever you come over? ‘Cause I can’t just stand there. I’ve got multiple areas I got to cover.”

At this, Kiicreen paused, and then Kaakri continued, “Well, can’t blame me for asking, right?” At that moment, he stood up, and quickly began to walk away, “Well, feel free to come back later, if you want to try it sometime. If you don’t send word ahead of time, just stay at an entrance and shout at the top of your lungs until someone comes.”

With this parting remark, Kaakri disappeared into the deeper areas of the aerophonics rooms, and by this point, both of their parents had noticed they’d been having a conversation. Kiicreen remembered what Kaakri’s father said after he walked up with Kiicreen’s dad, “Boy, you talkin’ to my son without someone knowing it? I’m his father, and I love ‘em, all the same, but if you ain’t watchin’ it, you’ll get a snapped wing someday. Kaakri ain’t someone to hold back his temper, and goodness knows I’ve tried to stop him. There ain’t no point tryin’ kid. He’ll keep sendin’ ya the folks with broken bones.”

Kiicreen found his heart sinking in his chest, thinking about Kaakri’s own father saying those words.

Kiicreen, that fellow is dangerous. Stay away from him.” Kiicreen remembered hearing his own father say.

“But…he said I could come over and walk around the aerophonics rooms with him…he told me to just yell if I didn’t send notice ahead of time and he’d eventually people would come and get me.”

Kiicreen remembered how his dad, and Kaakri’s father both seemed surprised at that, “Now…my son said that? Well….nothing’s impossible, I s’pose.”

…thinking back on it, while he was following Kaakri around now, keeping up with the rushed pace that the farmer’s son normally moved with, Kiicreen remembered how he’d originally argued with his father, before he finally let Kiicreen visit the aerophonics rooms to talk with Kaakri. At first, Kaakri seemed surprised the first day he’d come to visit. “Well, what do we have here, doc? You actually took me up on the offer, huh?” Before moving around the rooms at a pace so fast that Kiicreen couldn’t keep up, and within thirty minutes, was too tired to keep on going, and had to leave. “Well, figures, most people don’t walk around half as much as me.”

Most people would have given up by that point, but not Kiicreen. Every day that his legs didn’t ache from the exercise, Kiicreen went out and tried walking with Kaakri and keeping up with his pace, and each time, Kiicreen lasted a little longer. Each time he came back, Kaakri had seemed more and more perturbed, increasingly annoyed and losing that composure that he’d displayed previously. Finally, the polite, impersonal nickname, ‘doc’ vanished, and he started using Kiicreen’s name, because they were around each other too much for it to avoid names by that point. Sometimes, he still used nicknames, but the nature of them had changed. He’d occasionally called Kiicreen ‘beansprout’ which seemed to be a weak attempt at an insult, but Kiicreen didn’t quite understand how; maybe because little freshly-sprouted beans weren’t very strong plants, as Kiicreen had learned. Kiicreen couldn’t argue, Kaakri was still probably a lot stronger than him.

Whatever the reason, though, Kaakri didn’t ever try to tell Kiicreen outright to go away, so the doctor’s apprentice had continued going back and following Kaakri through the aerophonics rooms. During that time, Kiicreen realized that Kaakri was childish at heart, and he was short-tempered, but it wasn’t as obvious as everyone led on. He could cover it up, and he could act like he was in control for a very long time, but after a while, the façade would slip. When he was acting, Kaakri was strong, tough, intimidating, and he could keep his voice steady and even; he had that kind of cool, confident expression like nothing could phase him. The moment Kiicreen got past that, he realized that Kaakri was really just some awkward person.

He wasn’t good with people, and he wasn’t comfortable outside the aerophonics rooms. When he left the rooms, he seemed to visibly get nervous, and he’d cover it up with a sharp tongue and a rotten attitude to match. Really, Kaakri was just someone who didn’t know how to talk to people. He’d avoided making friends, and he had a tendency to cover up the fact that he was often alone by pretending that he couldn’t have them, because his job scared everyone off. When it came to violence, it seemed like going overboard was just one of the ways he handled stress—he went too far when he punished thieves, but really, it seemed that the real reason he attacked people was because they were invading his own, private space.

Of course, Kiicreen had learned that being too direct with Kaakri earned him a nasty glare and a menacing response, after the formalities and decency of a first meeting was gone. Even so, Kaakri had never hurt Kiicreen. Kaakri’s parents both liked Kiicreen, and seemed happy when he visited, and sometimes, they’d even invited Kiicreen over for dinner. During those times, Kaakri would usually be absent, and normally, people could look out into the aeophonics rooms and see him out there, eating his own rations by himself. A few times that Kiicreen had come to the rooms early during the morning hours, he’d wandered into the rooms by himself—when everyone considered him a regular visitor who was never a threat—and he’d actually catch Kaakri asleep in a corner somewhere. “Heh, what? You didn’t see nothing, got it?”

By the end of it all, Kaakri’s family had entirely accepted Kiicreen, and now, Kiicreen had lately been doing everything in his power to get the young farmer to come over for dinner at his own place where the doctors’ quarters were. He hadn’t been successful so far, but he figured, if he annoyed Kaakri enough, eventually he’d come over, just to make Kiicreen stop talking about it. There was no point in saying Kaakri hated Kiicreen outright, no matter how annoyed he got. No matter how many times Kaakri acted like he didn’t have friends, Kiicreen knew he’d had some sort of impact.

A lot fewer broken bones, especially in the wings, seemed to be the result. Sometimes an arm or a leg or a tail, but these days, Kaakri seemed to leave his victim’s wings alone. On days after Kiicreen treated some patient who claimed Kaakri had beaten them, he’d go visit later and the farmer’s son wouldn’t respond to anything Kiicreen said. He’d just silently walk around the fields, saying nothing, and Kiicreen would carry on one-sided conversations, like nothing happened. Sometimes, he’d bring up the people he’d treated, and sometimes, faintly, Kiicreen thought he’d see Kaakri just barely flinch at the mention of a broken bone.

Whatever the reason, he’d been getting through to him. Slowly, but surely.

Unfortunately, right now, Kaakri was too livid to listen to reason, and there was weird thumping coming from the depths of the ship…

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

Post by Whos Wed Aug 31, 2016 2:11 pm

Once he saw the reply from the System, Logov knew exactly what he had to do. Immediately, he ordered that a response be given to the System ship.

Communication transmitters, still active with residual radiation from previous messages, were once again powered up, and the following statement was issued: "We are glad to hear that you will so amicably cooperate with us. However, we must also send a boarding crew of our own to investigate the ship. Our units, once onboard, will not attempt to fire upon yours, and we ask that you order yours to behave equally cordial. If lifeforms are found, then we will have them brought to a joint meeting location, for further decision."

Meanwhile, the Fleetmaster still pondered the presence of this UFIAI entity. Its intentions seemed cursory at best, and superficial at worst. How did the UFIAI get ahold of the whereabouts of this Krylonian vessel? As far as Logov knew, he was the only one within the Confederacy to be informed of the location of the derelict Chimerosu ship.

UNKNOWN VESSEL RENAMED TO 'UFIAI VESSEL'
UNITED FLEETS OF INDEPENDENT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DOES NOT MATCH ANY CIVILIZATIONS IN DATABASE. FURTHER INFORMATION REQUIRED.
ARRANGING RESPONSES. RESPONSES TRANSMITTED
DEPLOYING 3 ADDITIONAL BOARDING PARTIES
TRANSMITTING NEW INSTRUCTIONS TO BOARDING UNITS>

4-1994/4 replied to each message in turn, the responses coming less than a second after the originals had arrived. The messages were of course still in the mathematical code.
To Vendor, "I am unit 4-1994/4 of the System. We are currently investigating this derelict vessel for possible survivors and salvage"
To Logov, "Unfortunately, the derelict vessel and its occupants are under System jurisdiction until we have completed our investigation. You may send your team after our boarding parties have finished investigating the vessel"
As the messages were being read, 4 new tactical transports zoomed out of 4-1994/4's hanger bays and moved over to the Chimerosu vessel, attaching themselves as the units onboard joined the original team.

--

The ten infantry units of the original boarding party received the new orders from 4-1994/4 as they attempted to get through the door to the living quarters. After discovering the code lock, two of them aimed their forearm lasers at the door and began cutting, the invisible beams vaporizing the metal. After a minute or so, a sizable section of the door fell forward with a clang, and the units moved through the opening with weapons readied.
Finding no one, they stepped into the large room that was the entrance to the living quarters, taking in the blue plants growing there and the numerous walkways leading up to different levels of hallways.
Two infantry units were left to guard the doorway in, while the the rest divided into four pairs which then boarded the walkways, each pair walking down a hallway.

Meanwhile, the 40 units from the three new boarding parties began making their way through the ship. One of the groups of ten started making their way towards the bridge of the ship, while others fanned out to investigate the rest it. The last group of ten began making their way to the living quarters, their travel time cut drastically by following the path made by the original boarding party.

Logov sat with his fist to his chin, acutely aware of the truly inconvenient situation that he had been presented with. This solar system was not under Imperial Coalition jurisdiction, neither had the Confederacy claimed it for anything. He could lie to the System and claim authority, but the lowness of that behavior was repulsive to the Fleetmaster.  He would have to take action, but due to the sensitive nature of first contact, he decided to act with respect and restraint.  If politeness failed, he was confident that he had a tactical advantage over the one alien ship. Scans of the space surrounding the Imperial Coalition fleet revealed nothing, which gave Logov some small comfort.

The Fleetmaster ordered that a response be sent to the System ship, with the following response: "Very well. However, if life forms are found aboard the vessel, then we insist on a joint meeting to decide on how best to assist them."

Still no response was sent to Vendor's ship. Logov was curious what inaction would prompt this apparent envoy of the UFIAI to do.

”Unit 4-1994/4 of the System, be informed that this particular derelict belonged to Krylonian empire which is member of the Confederacy. In the case that survivors are found aboard, the derelict would be considered to be their property. And as citizens of the Confederacy, their property is under Confederacy's jurisdiction and protection”, Vendor messaged back to the Unit 4-1994/4. It watched as more boarding crafts departed towards the derelict. Vendor was most displeased to see the valuable sample be contaminated so.

Noticing the silence and lack of action from the Jorro'kil side, Vendor sent a message to the Fleetmaster: ”Sir Fleetmaster, I have noticed that the Krylonian derelict is being boarded by a ship of, according to my information, unknown origin, with no apparent response from your fleet. While I am not advocating for anything violent, is sir Fleetmaster content to follow from the sidelines? I thought that the current and historical ties to the Chimerosu would oblicate some action from the Jorro'kil. On a sidenote, my deep-scan tells that there are several systems still active at that ship.”

Vendor wondered if it had gone too far, with both of the parties. The System was one big unkown variable, so it needed the Jorro'kil to act to have some control and foresight over the situation. The Confederate networks were well familiar to the Vendor, and now after the war and change of goverment the Jorro'kil's cyber-warfare had not evolved as fast as UFIAI's knowledge of it. Vendor was already opening one-sided contacts with the Jorro'kil fleet via diagnostic relays, using the maintainance protocols to prompt an automatic response. It was careful to not yet actually invade the systems, and was currently only keeping the diagnostic channels open.

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

Post by ViperaUnion Sat Sep 24, 2016 5:40 pm

Kaakri was busy shouting at the next person who had opened their door when he suddenly paused, beak agape, and slowly closed it, his eyes narrowing as he fell silent. The Chimerosu he had been interrogating flinched, "Listen, Kaakri, I didn't do anything, I promise you, I'm not the thie-"

Kaakri cut him off, "No, not that, be quiet." He said, turning head to look down the hallway, past Kiicreen, a suspicious look on his face, "Do you hear that?"

The operculum of Kiicreen's beak paled slightly, and his feathers shrank down, "....what is it?" He asked uneasily. He still felt highly nervous, and Kaakri's sudden calm behavior wasn't helping the unease he'd felt since the asteroid had hit the ship earlier.

Kaakri tilted his head, before suddenly, he made a hissing sound, every muscle in his body tensing, "Something's coming. Too big to be Chimerosu, I can feel it in the airways."

He looked at the resident he had been talking to,

"We need to hide. Quickly, let us in. After that we close the door, turn off lights, and camouflage, understand?"

The hallways of Chimerosu structures were almost always a hexagon shape, stemming from the ancient tendency of their ancestors to build nests with such a shape. Each corridor was about ten feet in height, though Chimerosu were far smaller than this. More often than not, the size of a room or chamber was greater than the residents because Chimerosu relished flying, and in confined spaces, they had a tendency to do so, even when it was not appropriate. Lack of places to fly for long distances often motivated them to fly or hop from place to place, versus walking. This contrasted greatly with observed behavior on actual planets, where they would fly incredibly long distances, and remain walking inside of structures. It was a tendency deeply ingrained into the species as a whole.

By comparison the doors were quite small--about five feet, though ducking was of no trouble to them, as their bodies were long and ribbon-like, and their wings could fold tightly to their sides. This confined doorway was something of a security issue, but was only present among Krylonians, who were far more timid by nature than the newer races found within the UCN. Small doorways meant only small creatures could get into a dwelling via stealthy methods. There was a narrow hallway the same height of the door for about three feet before it opened into a hexagon-shaped room with ceilings roughly seven feet in height.

Notable about all of these structures, they were not common on Krylon, except in very rural areas where there were not large populations. Chimerosu normally felt safe in large groups, but in space, they had always been cautious.

Of course, immediate awareness of potential danger wasn't as easy to come by, as they had long since believed that they would never be found.

Even so, the airflow changes that could be created by a large object was enough for them to, in effect, 'sense' something was coming. They didn't know what, but they were regardless, suspicious.

Not a single Chimerosu emerged from its chamber, and the three that had been standing in the hallway vanished. The entire residence area fell silent, tension charging the air.

The invocation of the legal jurisdiction by Vendor garnered the attention of 4-1994/4. It considered this for a time lasting milliseconds, then composed a response to both Vendor and Logov and sent them on their way.
"Your claim of jurisdiction is recognized. If survivors are found, we will hand the vessel and the survivors over to your custody. Otherwise we will return the ship after the completion of our survey" was beamed back to Vendor
Meanwhile, to Logov "The System recognizes the derelict as belonging to the Confederacy, and will be handed over with any survivors should they be found. Otherwise the ship will be returned upon completion of our survey. We respectfully suggest that in the future legal jurisdiction be mentioned as a first order of business to prevent miscommunication"

While this was going on, a flotilla of three battlecruisers departed the System's territory and began the journey to the system.

--

The pairs of infantry units continued to explore the habitation section while the other boarding teams explored the various sections of the ship that had been assigned them.
One of the pairs however, the System units having excellent hearing, heard the brief speech from Kaakri before he and the others dissappeared into the apartment. They quickly approached the source of the noise, however since they had been in a nearby hallway the precision was limited.
They scanned the area with their hyperspectral vision and sniffed the air with their olfactory sensors, taking note of the infrared signature from the warmer areas on the floor where Kaakri and Kiicreen had stood outside the door. One of them approached it and raised its arm, tapping gently but firmly on the door with its hand in a knocking manner. The other meanwhile, stood a few feet back at the ready for any potential threats.

"We respectfully suggest that in the future legal jurisdiction be mentioned as a first order of business to prevent miscommunication."

Logov puzzled over the System's latest message. The Fleetmaster had intentionally disregarded invoking the name of the Confederate Nations of Ravena; Confederacy politics were especially volatile as of late, and he had no desire to receive criticism from a wide range of government officials. His mission report had to be flawless, in keeping with what he hoped was his equally flawless character.

Shortly following the message from the System, Logov's ship received a message from the UFIAI vessel.

”Sir Fleetmaster, I have noticed that the Krylonian derelict is being boarded by a ship of, according to my information, unknown origin, with no apparent response from your fleet. While I am not advocating for anything violent, is sir Fleetmaster content to follow from the sidelines? I thought that the current and historical ties to the Chimerosu would oblicate some action from the Jorro'kil. On a sidenote, my deep-scan tells that there are several systems still active at that ship.”

The Fleetmaster became increasingly irritated as the mechanical voice spoke. Surely, this AI had intervened in the conversation between Logov and the System unit, but for what purpose? Its interest in the Krylonian ship stood out as the most likely candidate. This UFIAI unit seemed to want the Jorro'kil to obtain the derelict, which made Logov suspicious. He wondered if perhaps this was a rogue AI, even allied with the enemies of the Confederacy. Whatever the case, Logov decided to keep a close eye on the UFIAI vessel from henceforth.

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

“How’s the cloak holding up?” asked Nevra Churim. "Have any of them noticed us?"

“Cloak fully functional, Sir,” responded the helmsman Vatarri. “No one seems to have noticed our presence.”

Nevra nodded. “Good.” Sitting back, he sighed. “The question is: What now?”

Nevra pondered the situation carefully. What was the Imperial Coalition doing here? This made Nevra’s  own mission quite difficult. Last year had been one of strained relationships between the Confederacy and Vathoris. The original Free Absolute had been overthrown with the aid of an organization known as the Alkisuns, as well as by the Markovan Empire. They too had experienced a coup that had assassinated the Emperor, and forced his son Tevri and all loyal to him to flee. The new leader, a Markovan named Gettrav, had given his full support to the Imperial Coalition and the Alkisuns; Vathoris, however, had been sympathetic to the Free Absolute and to Tevri, causing definite strain in relations that had led to a certain degree of conflict. In fact, it had led to the death of Gettrav himself; it was no secret that the Markovan leader had been slain by a young Vatarri. The Markovan Empire was now divided in half, one half in support of Tevri, and the other supporting Gettrav’s successor. The Imperial Coalition, however, was still in power, and their presence here was definitely dangerous. Nevra’s ship, although by no means ineffective for fighting, was no battle ship, and Nevra’s mission had been one of recovery, not conflict. Things could definitely go South fast if the situation was not handled carefully.

Then there was the UFIAI vessel. Nevra knew that the United Federation of Independent Artificial Intelligences had recently aligned themselves with the Confederacy. Still, after what had happened five years ago, with the UFIAI allying for a time with the now defunct Imperial Despot of Jiiran and attacking Vathoris, few Vathorins were willing to trust them.

And then there was the other ship. It was very large, and did not match anything in the databases. They had also clearly boarded the Chimerosu vessel, and heaven knew what was taking place inside. Who were they, and what were their intentions? Were they friendly or hostile?

“What shall we do, Sir?” asked the helmsman. “Shall we attempt to intervene?”

Nevra rubbed the side of his snout for an instant, and then made a decision.

“Not yet. However, send a message to the Chimerosu vessel and let them know we are here, and ask them if they need help. Meanwhile, see if you can get through to that other ship. We need to ascertain who they are.”

If any radio or COMM system on the Krylonian vessel was still active or manned, then they would receive the following message: This is the CV Hadrin. On behalf of the Confederacy of Vathoris and the nation of Daro, we greet you. We can’t help but notice that you have been boarded. Do you require assistance? Please respond.

Menawhile,  4-1994/4 received this transmission: This is Captain Nevra Churim of the vessel CV Hadrin of the nation of Daro, of the Confederacy of Vathoris, to unidentified vessel boarding the Chimerosu ship. We are allies of the species whose ship this belongs to, and we have come on a rescue mission to retrieve them. You cannot sense us because we are cloaked, and we would like to know who you are and what your intentions are with this vessel. Also, we would be very appreciative if you do not reveal our presence to the Coalition vessel that is also in the area, as we are not on the best of terms with them at this time. Please respond.

Something Old, Something New - IC Empty Re: Something Old, Something New - IC

From within the room, all of the lights were turned off, and due to the lack of windows, it was pitch black. All of the Chimerosu, upon hearing the knock, camouflaged themselves, fading into invisibility.

Faintly, voices emerged from within the room, but they were in Krylonian tongue, so that it only sounded like faint chirps and whistles. Several people conversed, seemingly unsure of how to respond.

The flurry of speech carried on for a few moments, before a voice answered the knock in broken Loccalian.

"Who...there...? Not....hurt....we?"

It was Kiicreen, in the end, who answered, and because he had never truly practiced or found any need to speak anything other than his native tongue, he often forgot what words to use, and the strange way words were formed was extremely alien to the typical speech that he often used. He was positive he hadn't used the right sentence structure, but this was stressful, and he could only hope that whoever had found the ship wasn't a threat.

Twenty years.

Twenty years they'd been there, and Kiicreen and Kaakri hatched there.

Twenty years and some thing new was arriving.

<NO RESPONSE FROM COALITION VESSELS

RENAMING TO 'CONFEDERACY VESSEL'
CONFEDERACY VESSEL REQUESTING TO NOT BE IDENTIFIED TO OTHER VESSELS IN AREA. REQUEST APPROVED
TRANSMITTED RESPONSE TO CONFEDERACY VESSEL>

The lack of response from Logov was noted by 4-1994/4, and it continued waiting for one while it considered causes for it.
At the message from Nevra, active sensor signatures spiked rapidly as it searched the area, refining parameters and adjusting scan resolution. Within moments, it detected the gravitational signature of the Vathoris ship, and it locked onto the location. A tight beam message was sent back immediately after the location of the ship had been found and it classified. This message was composed in Locallian unlike its previous communications, and read "Vathoris vessel, your request of confidentiality is granted. I am unit 4-1994/4 of the System, and we are conducting salvage and possible rescue operations on the Kryolonian derelict"

--

The faint response from Kiicreen was picked up by the units outside the door. A few milliseconds passed as they received the new language updates from the battlecruiser and translated the message. Then a response was formed and made vocal from the same unit that had knocked.
The words would be right, however the pronunciation was rather off as was the inflection, making it difficult to understand for and expert speaker "We are the System. We mean no harm to you. Who are you?"

Kiicreen, hidden in the darkness, frowned, not sure what they had said. He looked around, not sure where the others were, before asking them in Krylonian what had just been said.

"I'll take the conversation from here," An older male voice said, this time more fluently.

"Your pronunciation is off, the boy doesn't understand you...I do, however." This older male did not bother eliminating his camouflage. "We are Chimerosu, and we have been stranded here on this ship in the middle of space for twenty years without contact. Everyone was hiding before you arrived because someone stole food and there was a search. Please forgive the misunderstanding."

Kaakri seemed to mumble something that sounded irritated, but it wouldn't be translatable.

"Calm....down...." Kiicreen replied, "We....find...thief..." Kiicreen, of course, was trying to avoid speaking too much in Krylonian, for the sake of avoiding angering these people. The System was nothing that anyone had heard of before. It wasn't anything the Chimerosu Empire had ever associated with, so it was best to avoid misunderstandings as much as possible.

"Are....we....speak....Loccalian now?...Burn thief....steal hurts all....food limited....insult Kaakri...insult farm..." It sounded like Kaakri was complying with the unspoken rule to now speak Loccalian, but he seemed very irritated.

There was a sound like a long sigh, before the older Chimerosu spoke again, "I am Ghirshi, and this room is my family's. You may come inside, but please give us a moment to turn the lights back on. We panicked when we heard you. Also, watch your head, the ceiling is lower by the door."

With this there was shuffling in the room, and a flicking of a switch was heard as lights were turned back on.

"What now, Sir?" asked the helmsman.

"Any response from the Krylonians?" asked Nevra.

"None, Sir. Shall we retransmitt the message?"

Nevra nodded. "Yes, do so. And send another message to 4-whatever."

A moment later, 4-1994/4 received the following transmission: This is the CV Hadrin to the System vessel. We would like to send a landing party on board the Krylonian vessel. Also, we have been trying to contact them, but have received no response. Do you know the reason for this?
