Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
Darkel Edit: Thread updated. Will be continuing to update as more progress is made.
We have selected a new galaxy to use as Ravena's map:

The Sector System
Instead of using the 5-arm system, we will be using a system of sectors and actual coordinates to determine the location of territories, empires, etc. Here is the system laid out in an outline. It has only "subsectors" which are small strips that make up the sectors.

Here is a version with a newer grid. We are working on transferring some of the names, colors, and sector breaks onto this one:

The Tsardom is supposed to be in an empty isolated sector, a little far from the Krathunian border. About 400 - 1000 lightyears away perhaps. There should also be more empty teritorries, unless the previous plot states elsehow

The felinites currently occupy one planet that as I said is near the end of the fourth arm. Its roughly just off of the new worlds of the Krathunian Covenant. In that little, seemingly unoccupied tip.

The Dominion occupies much of arm 5, actually, an should be included per their return.

I think we should leave a few chunks of the galactic arms empty for any new empires to be introduced.

I agree, Raptor.
@ Darkel: Where are the Dranzoot, too? Forgot to mention them in the OP.
@ Everyone else: Thanks, I'll edit this all as soon as other people can tell me where their races are.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
Today in chat, a very important proposal was introduced - The usage of a new, larger, and more complex galaxy map. The map we would use is this:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
There are several disputes that come with this, however. The general consensus in chat was that we maintain current locations in general, however...
-There would be more than 5 arms, accounting for a lot of territory. Due to this, several plot items are now in trouble - For example, the Third Arm Confederacy. There were dividing opinions in chat on whether we should maintain the arm system or introduce a new sector system.
-The issue of how we would canonically introduce this change is also important. Was this what the galaxy was always like, or did it somehow change?
There were a couple more issues that were brought up but they were resolved. But, I need everyone's opinion on this before we can proceed - Should we keep the old map or introduce this new one? Please vote in the poll and post here. Thanks!

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
It would be alright to use this, I guess, though I would like to decide for myself where my stuff fits in. I guess we could just say it's always looked this way. Certain things could remain, though; we might keep things in the number arm we gave them before, just for the sake of continuity. We could say, maybe, that the rest was just unexplored territory.

I could probably adapt a map from that image with the arms being numbered that would make life easier, and change the way the galaxy looks so it's more...mappish...

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
Already done.

I reversed the horizontal angle of the map so it's more similar to the old one, and numbered the arms. My only issues were with the 5th arm being in that weird spot, and that patch right above the 3rd arm could either be a new, small one or an extension of the 3rd.

I have a program that can take color out and enhance the definition between the arms, so it's easier to read territories, and tell what the galaxy is.

Ah, ok. That would be better then, though make sure to rotate it 180 degrees horizontally.

I voted yes. Reason? We need more empty territories for new races

I like it but I can't see the whole map on my Wii U. Could you srink it so it fits the page when its finished?

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
I vote yes. We need more space for new races. We're running out of room. It doesn't help that we have so many gigantic territories, (which need to be shrunk a bit).
The Dranzoot are somewhere in arm 2, I believe.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
I voted yes because, as much as I like the old map, we do need a bigger one, since we do plan on accommodating other races.
On another note, I was thinking, about how it might fit lore if "Stubby" is a part of Arm 3, and the Jorro'kil were actually created inside this little branch. It seems enough "out of the way" for them to not have encountered too many (or any, for that matter) of the major races in the plot until they were supposed to.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
I voted yes because I'd like an enormous galaxy to develop further.
I also support creating sectors instead of arms (We can always name a sector "The Third Arm"), but I'm fine with whatever you decide.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
One way to sort the map areas would be dividing them to clusters. Clusters could have sectors in them. Also clusters fit to galaxies naturally.

Okay, I changed the image, made it more defined, took out color, and also put in a grid, which might make life easier.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
\Awesome job, Vipera. Perhaps we can use this to make the clusters/sectors and possibly create a labeling system to accurately show where things are?
I'll keep up the poll for one more day but it looks like there was a general consensus that we need a new map.

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
We could have a number and letter system for the different sectors. For example, we'd have columns as numbers and rows as letters, and a sector could be A1, G3, etc.

I would suggest a circular grid to be more realistic and impartial. Plus it'll make intergalactic navigation easier
p.s. What tools do you use?

Re: Galaxy Map - Sector Map Finished!
I made a version of the map with circular grid. I have the project files saved so I can adjust the colours, sizes, grid opacity and put empire colours beneath the grid afterwards.

@Curius: That's a good map, but I suggest increasing the contrast. Nice grid though, looks awesome. Maybe give it a bluish holographic hue, to mimic the forum colors
