Frigius

A cold, arctic planet completely covered in tundra, Frigius presents an extremely hostile environment, with dramatic weather conditions that make even simple tasks such as entering and exiting its atmosphere a challenge. Located in a solar system near the very outer reaches of the galaxy, it could go unnoticed for ages, and yet it is often regarded as the capital of The United Chimerosu Nations (UCN), due to being located nearest to the center of their territory, and home to the most technologically advanced and energy-efficient race that makes up the empire. The Frigian Chimerosu who inhabit this planet, Chimerosu glacialis, are adapted to survival in the extremely cold, harsh climate, not needing any special equipment to survive in the freezing temperatures, while other races typically require thermo-regulating suits to prevent hypothermia. With a resident race not reliant on technology or trade for survival, and a dangerous atmosphere and environment that requires special tools for others to survive effectively, Frigius doubles not only as a trading point, but as a powerful defense against invaders.

In space, Frigius orbits around the star Enigmus, which is located in a congregation of stars between the first and second arms of the galaxy, and when pointed out on a map of the galaxy, appears to be on the very edge, the star cluster it belongs to being a very small smear, far from any other empires that might take interest, and barely close enough to avoid not being on the map at all. Orbiting Enigmus along with Frigius are two other planets, a dwarf planet, and a gas giant that has been studied enough to be deemed unsuitable for any sort of colony. Enigmus itself is a small blue star, having no binary twin or special movement associated with it. The first planet in the Enigmus system is Frigius, so far from the sun in orbit that it barely exists in the radius that supports life. Next, the second planet in the system, roughly three times the size of Frigius, and the largest world, is the blue-violet gas giant Hazere, surrounded by a faint white ring that is barely visible. The last planet in the system is the dwarf planet Pilars, which is recognizable for its odd, elongated oval-shape, and its extremely eccentric orbit, which is like its shape, more like an oval than a circle.

Frigius itself, when viewed from space, has no moons or rings, and it appears to be a completely desolate, frozen wasteland. Much of the planet's surface, approximately 60%, is covered in oceans, which are frozen into glaciers, due to the low temperatures, distinguishable from landmasses only due to having a slightly darker blue color. In regards to landmasses, Frigius has only three continents, though they are large in size, and make up 40% of the planet's surface. The continents of Norte, Westora, and Ethous, despite all being covered in a thick blanket of snow, are notable in having different landmasses from one another. Due to its nearly pure-white coloration, resulting from the snow and ice, Frigius reflects a large degree of light, and therefore it appears to glow from space. Although many races may think there is no life present on the planet, Frigius actually has a wide array of flora and fauna. The reason for most being fooled, however, is that most of the life on the planet is aquatic, living in the oceans beneath the glaciers. Though there are terrestrial animals and plant life that exist on land, their diversity and numbers pale in comparison to the rich marine life hidden beneath the ice.

The continent Norte, the largest and northern-most of the three landmasses on Frigius, is unique in that it is mostly flat, snowy plains which stretch on for miles in every direction. On these plains grow the most diverse amount of terrestrial plant life present on the planet, which, due to the general temperature, and the lay of the land as a whole, consist mostly of short grass species, though there are a few bush species as well. Because the snow is packed tightly over the ground, and there is a thick layer of permafrost, the roots of these plants tend to grow very deep, and are often coarse and fibrous, making pulling them up practically impossible, the adaptations of woody stems and deep-reaching growth allowing them to draw water from below the frozen soil, while still insulating against the cold. The leaves of these plants are an odd, pale shade of aqua green, with furry leaves or blades, and are often not immediately seen, due to frequently being buried by snow, though they can survive for a very long time without dying. The plants that grow past the snow are often not noticed due to their pale coloration, which is why they are not visible from space. These plants serve as a food source for the various ice plain animals that roam the continent. Most typically, species from Norte include herd animals, most famously the Wooly Tuskiderm, an enormous, elephant-like species, the largest land animal on the planet. Other herd species include the Wooly Equinoros, and the Musk Elk. Smaller herbivorous species include the Bashrew, and the Snowy Ferrecoon. There are only two predatory species on this continent. The largest predator, the Ursuroar, is a gigantic, bear-like creature with some features reminiscent of a lion, and is the most feared terrestrial creature on the planet. The second predator, one that hunts smaller creatures, is the Mevulpin, a small, cat-like creature that possesses a few fox-like features, but overall has a stocky build.

Because of the flat lay of the land, all of the spaceports on Frigius are present on Norte, as the lack of tall landmasses make it the safest continent on which to attempt a landing. The lack of obstacles also makes it easier to build structures without taking into consideration exceeding boundaries, such as is the case with mountainous regions or plateaus. Most of the spaceports are underground, where the environment can be controlled, and races other than Frigian natives can safely enter without needing to wear specialized gear. Most entrances to these ports are concealed due to the prevalent usage of white paint on all structures, which perfectly blends with the landscape. Further from these major ports, is one of the Frigian's military and research bases, which is located mostly above-ground, and therefore allows Frigian natives to conduct research and other matters in peace, without interference from other races. Without permission, gaining access to any structure on the continent is extremely difficult, making any sort of enemy infiltration practically impossible.

The second continent, Westora, and the smallest continent on Frigius, is notable for its mostly alpine environment, containing high mountain peaks that rise past the clouds, with lots of natural caverns, and even a few hidden grottoes where water exists in liquid form, where it can be reached without the need to dig through ice first. On this continent is also the only tree species that lives on the planet, a plant that produces special fruits that are regarded as a luxury item and a powerful natural remedy throughout the empire, due to the 'Malumnix Fruit', as they are called, being extremely uncommon due to the lack of places suitable for cultivation, and the amazing nutritional content of the fruit, which can cure most illnesses. Most of the civilian population of Frigius lives on this continent, their homes carved into the rocky cliffs, and most of those who live inland having the occupation of cultivating Snowflake Apple Trees in terraced gardens built into the cliffs. Those who live in coastal regions are typically reliant on the sea for food and an occupation. Every day, workers may venture out onto the glacier, cutting holes in various places to catch fish or gather marine plants, the fact that the ocean is frozen over allows people to go out for miles, and catch fish of enormous size, though overfishing is practically impossible, due to the presence of ice making fishing with ships inefficient and dangerous. Most food eaten is either grown or caught locally.

The third continent, Ethous, possesses a series of plateaus, having elevated masses of land that are flat on top, and therefore has some semblances to a canyon. There are also large glaciers with holes in them, carved out by the wind over time. This is regarded as the industrial center of Frigius, most of the planet's power stations and mining companies are based here. Within the soil and ground of Ethous, as it is with all the continents of Frigius, there are plentiful minerals and ores that bolster industrial growth. However, the reason most mines are based here, is because there are less incidences of grottoes that can flood mines, and the plateaus are generally easier to mine than the spear-like mountains of Westora. Scientific research facilities are based here, and so are many of the factories responsible for building the transportation of Frigius, including spaceships, which must have certain design features, in order to resist becoming damaged in the atmosphere due to the extreme cold and the strong winds. There is no prospective value in Westora, however, as there are relatively few incidences of gold or silver strikes, though copper, iron, and other elements are extremely plentiful, as are several other metals unique to the planet. Silicon, an element needed most often for programming machines, is the most valuable element to be found, and also happens to be extremely plentiful, which is the reason for Frigius' advanced technology, and the cheapness of solar panels made by the UCN, making solar energy a cost-efficient way of generating power.

Weather in Frigius is most often dangerous for organisms not adapted to living here. The average temperature year-round is a bone-chilling -150 degrees Fahrenheit, and can easily fall to -170 degrees at night. The wind-chill factor of the planet, almost always present, can blow away stored body heat and make the temperature seem ten degrees colder than it really is, making maintaining body heat extremely difficult. Constant blizzards that occur in the upper atmosphere during nighttime hours make flying a hazard, and thus, unless specially equipped with technology designed by the Frigian Chimerosu who live here, ships can be in danger of freezing and losing power. Auroras are also prevalent around the planet's poles at night, as well as various other phenomenons, such as diamond dust, and sun dogs, which can appear on any part of the planet on a clear day. It is this combination of danger and useful resources and features that makes Frigius one of the most powerful planets in the UCN.

Caverna

Even to the native inhabitants, Caverna is by far the most lethal and hostile planet of any world belonging to the United Chimerosu Nations (UCN). An extremely large planet that orbits closely to its sun, with a layered atmosphere that consists mostly of highly toxic greenhouse gases, not only can one breath of air be fatal, but the average temperature is high enough to kill almost anything. Seemingly a gas giant from space, even the most intelligent of races will immediately deem it unfit for any sort of colonization, deterred not only by the colorful yet deadly gasses, but by the intense heat. In their leap to conclusions that the planet has no value at all, most races will only see the surface of the planet, never once investigating to see if its outer appearance is hiding something better from the rest of the galaxy. In this case, Caverna's atmosphere hid one of the most hardy Chimerosu species in the galaxy, and an enormous planet that is mostly solid, the vastness and size of the atmosphere itself being relatively small compared to the amount of matter inside.

When viewed from space, Caverna orbits the giant red star Infernus, one of four planets in its system, and the only one that can support life, surprisingly, slightly too close to the sun to be in the zone that supports life for a red giant. Caverna is the second-largest planet in its system, and appears to be a massive glowing ball of rainbow-hued gases, which swirl about in several places, indicating large, powerful storms, which can last for an untold number of years. With the glow and location of Caverna indicating extremely high temperatures, and the swirling gases and great size making it look in every way like a gas giant, it is often automatically regarded by races not familiar with it as uninhabitable, as are all the other planets in the system. The first planet in the system is Caverna, followed by Aquilyn, and Zybora, and finally, Xerna. The three other planets are also gas giants of various sizes, Xerna, the last planet, being the largest. Thousands of moons orbit Zybora, the third planet, but none are large enough or suitable for supporting any sort of life. Aquilyn is a bright, aqua blue color, and has streaks and spots that are a bright purple. Zybora is a bright yellow-green, having red spots where its storms are. Xerna, the last planet, is a strange, hazy mix of pale blue-white and emerald green, having large, prominent rings made of ice orbiting it, though it surprisingly has no moons. Comets occur frequently in the Infernus system, and on average there are at least three comets in the system at all times.

On its surface, Caverna lacks the kind of environment needed for life. It has no oceans to help cool the atmosphere, and the atmosphere itself is largely carbon dioxide, mixed with other, highly-toxic gasses, which average at a temperature that is immediately lethal to a majority of creatures. In many ways, if the temperature does not kill something, then the toxic atmosphere will. The thickness and coloration of the gases higher up in Caverna's atmosphere obscure the ground from space, although once past these, it becomes evident that the planet's geography is mostly just a dark grey, rocky landscape. However, breaking up the rocky plains and canyons are long cracks--too small for anything to fit through, but just enough for certain gas exchanges to take place. Also, the most notable, are circular metal vaults made of a dark material, which open from the inside out, and seal so perfectly that they are airtight, the only evidence there is life at all. On the surface, Caverna is barren, but beneath the ground, is a different story.

Caverna is riddled with tunnels and massive chasms, an entire subterranean ecosystem completely independent of the sun for survival. A world insulated from the blistering heat about its surface, water is present in all three forms of matter underground, the basis upon which unique life thrives. How this is possible, is due to the unique minerals that form the planet, a great number of them scattered throughout the crust and mantle surrounding the relatively small core, several of them naturally producing light of various wavelengths. Thanks to these special 'Glowstones', as many have come to call them, plant life can exist below ground, and in turn these plants support animals. Most plant life in Caverna is not brightly colored, absorbing almost all possible wavelengths of light, which results in a deep, grey-purple color, perhaps speckled with tinges of blue. Due to a relative lack of wind that isn't directly beneath the crust near crevices and fissures, most plants rely solely on unique forms of transportation to pollinate and scatter seeds. Because plants almost never rely on respiration, stored glucose molecules are often used in seeds and reproduction, providing energy that allows them to travel further away, or attract pollinators. Because of the unique biosphere Caverna has, regions and ecosystems are often determined depending on how far or close they are from the core and surface of the planet. One certain aspect of Caverna, however, is that without Glowstones and plants, there would be no safe air in the caverns, and life would not survive for long.

Animals in Caverna have an even mix of herbivorous and carnivorous species, there are also a few places with marine life, though these are not as common as terrestrial species. Due to certain Glowstones only giving off certain colors, and the general lack of light where Glowstones are not present, sight is often rare among Cavernian species, powerful eyes only present in caverns that have enough light for vision to be beneficial. As a result, species on the planet are for the most part blind, instead relying on sounds, smells, and vibrations to navigate. Plant life has adapted to attracting pollinating species. Due to most creatures with vision having poor eyesight, or very sharp eyes, flowers typically have structures that allow them to glow, thanks to special chemical reactions.  The stamen and anthers of the flowers, containing pollen, use energy that allows them to vibrate, producing a sound that attracts the pollinators that wish to drink nectar. Fruit also spreads seeds by being eaten. Herbivorous creatures can locate their food sources by unique means, due to both plant and the consumers being adapted to one another. Carnivores on Caverna are extremely dangerous creatures that can hunt in total darkness, being able to sense the slightest movement in the ground, and even detect heat signatures, or track by scent, sound and echolocation also being means of finding things. Many creatures may only be able to survive in certain caverns on the planet, though many more are known to be proficient burrowers, able to move through solid rock.

It is because of Caverna's unique ecosystems that it is one of the most protective planets in regards to invasions. Its atmosphere makes safe entry without permission impossible, and no creature can go on the planet's surface without wearing protective gear. The planet is also highly resistant to introduced species, most things being unable to survive for long before being slaughtered by the natural flora and fauna, or merely killed by competition. Despite this, however, most Cavernian species cannot survive easily away from the planet, being very fragile outside their natural environment, the plants seldom ever surviving exposure to actual sunlight, and most animals being sensitive to conditions on the surface of other planets. Cavernian Chimerosu, being an intelligent race, are the only introduced species known to have adapted to survive on the planet without any sort of interference, having gained enhanced senses, and still retaining relatively good eyesight. Cavernians also have several domestic animal breeds from Krylon that have adapted to survive, but this is often due to the race interfering and preventing wild animals from attacking. As a result, Cavernians are the only true introduced species that did not require help to adapt. Any introduction of wild animals or plants to the planet that is not carefully monitored often results in the entire stock of non-native species being killed by various factors.

Weather underground in Caverna can vary, but due to the great size of certain caverns, and the presence of water, there are weather patterns such as rain, though there is no wind to move clouds, and so weather remains isolated only in the largest of chambers. The temperatures remain at stable, comfortable levels, though they never dip lower than 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Near the surface, the highest temperatures recorded, remarkably, have been roughly 125 degrees, much like a desert. this is a shocking contrast to surface temperatures, which average year-round around 400 degrees, which can immediately kill almost any form of life, save for highly resistant archaea, protists among which similarly-related organisms from different planets can only be found in boiling lakes, or other deadly environments, though these protists cannot survive anywhere else. In the UCN, Caverna is ultimately regarded as one of the most unique environments in the galaxy.

Vitis

A lush, tropical paradise with a list of still-being-discovered species for all forms of life, Vitis is by far the most inviting planet of all the worlds belonging to the United Chimerosu Nations (UCN). A planet that orbits a comfortable distance around its almost equally-sized binary suns, Vitis has a complex change of seasons, but the temperature never dips below freezing, or even gets severely cold, resulting in summery weather year-round. With no oceans to speak of, most of Vitis' water is either in large, underground springs, clouds, or in the gigantic rivers that wind their way across its surface, some so large that they can be seen from space. All of the world's water is fresh, and the planet's great size, atmospheric composition, and location in proximity to its suns, bolsters flora growth. Vitis is most unique for the colossal size of its plant life, with trees that are larger than skyscrapers, and flowers the size of houses. Although seemingly a peaceful place, the world is a deadly jungle at night, and as a result, anyone who visits Vitis must always keep track of the time of day, only being outside during daytime hours, and quickly retreating into a safe place at night, should predators come.

From space, Vitis is one of two planets in its binary star system. Vitis orbits the two almost equally-sized stars Veranda A and Veranda B, Veranda A being the larger of the two. Because the two stars are equally-sized, and are close to one another, Veranda A and B circle one another in a constant orbit that seems to be in a single space, and this results in odd seasonal patterns for the planets of the system. Vitis is the first planet in the Veranda system, and orbits a comfortable, safe distance from the suns. Vitis also possesses a pair of moons, Celestia and Illumine, Celestia being the larger of the two, but orbiting further away from the planet than Illumine. The final planet in the system is the rather violent-looking world Storma. A planet with no magnetic field, it still isn't big enough to be a gas giant, but Storma is covered with green clouds, and from flashes in its atmosphere that one could see, even from space, it appears to experience constant, violent storms, with a large amount of deadly, unpredictable lightning that makes studying it difficult. Storma is named after a popular Chimerosu legend, as homage to the original Chimerosu race, and due in part to the unique coloration of Vitisan Chimerosu feathers, which are green, much like the feral heroine's.

On its surface, every inch of Vitis is covered with lush, emerald-green plant life. What part of the world does not have plants is covered with water, and the largest concentrations of water come from the massive rivers that cross it, so great in size that they can be seen from space, though thousands of decent-sized lakes and streams that are not visible are present across the land. The incredible, nourishing atmosphere bolsters both plant and animal life, and the concentration of certain gasses is constantly regulated by the respiration and photosynthesis of the flora and fauna. Because the atmosphere is somewhat large, no mountain on the world, however tall, is great enough to have its peak in a place where breathing is difficult. As a result of the weather and atmosphere, plant life also reaches massive, gargantuan size. The average tree rivals the tallest skyscraper buildings on other planets, and those may very well be just saplings, extremely young compared to the older trees, located in the center of certain groves dominated largely by one species. The trees are so great that they vanish well-beyond the clouds, and the foliage typically obscures most of the ground itself. Unlike a rainforest, during the day, the natural growth of most tree branches allows light to pass through the canopy, making the forest floor surprisingly visible. Glowing fungi also aid in seeing, as do various other insects near the forest floor. Shrubs can be the size of houses, and it's a miracle that the soft, velvet-like grass is just long and normal-looking, and not the size of what a tree really looks like.

Animals on Vitis are small, compared to the plant life, although the number of species is still unknown, and there are on occasion a few creatures that grow to gigantic size as adults. Just a small glimpse of Vitis suggests there are millions of known species, and still millions more that remain undiscovered, and have yet to be found. Most harmless animals, such as herbivores or small omnivores, move about during the day, though there are several carnivorous species that may be active during morning hours, mostly predators that prefer luring their prey into a trap. As long as the sun is up, one can take a walk on the forest floor and be safe, as long as they are cautious not to walk into dark, shady areas where predators might be hiding. This is a striking contrast to nighttime hours. At night, or rather, just as the sun begins to set, smaller creatures flee to the nearest hiding place they can find, and attempt to escape the forest floor at all costs. This is because at night terrifyingly large predators, with a wide array of abilities, and unlike daytime predators, ones that will chase down their victims, will come out of their various dens and hiding places to hunt. The only saving grace for certain creatures is that only one known predator like this can climb trees, and as such, anything that lives off the ground is unlikely to fall victim. The only creatures truly adapted to surviving predators like these are the Vitisan Chimerosu, who are ever-vigilant, and fly with incredible speed and maneuverability that makes escaping from attackers possible.

For Vitis, almost all dwellings made by the natives are supported by great tree branches, and only the truly brave--or foolish, build their homes on the ground without some sort of boundary to protect themselves. Because the ecosystem is precious, because of the incredible ability it has to support live, Vitisans are extremely protective and in-tune with nature. The structures built on the planet are not only supported on a mess of branches and platforms, but are also often built from materials that are not harmful to the environment, or harmful to build. Beautiful gardens supported on thicker branches grow some of the widest varieties of edible fruits and vegetables in the galaxy, and produce fuels much of the economy on Vitis. Cultivating techniques, and focus on proper nutrition and care for the planet's environment results in great contributions to agriculture, and some of the best doctors come from Vitis, as common yet typically fatal illnesses can be quickly treated on the planet through all-natural means. Much of the improved health of patients is contributed to the overall radiant health of the planet, and how pristine the environment is. It is because of this combination of factors that Vitisans are regarded as the most harmonious of all the UCN races, as well as the greatest motivators for eco-friendly practices.

Weather in Vitis is extremely pleasant, year-round. Temperatures never dip below 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and they never exceed 100 degrees, either. Because of this, the weather is regarded as summery year-round, and plants grow to gigantic size due to optimal conditions, as well as the great, rich atmosphere that can support them. Because of the incredible effort to protect this pristine ecosystem, Vitisans are among the best agricultural and all-natural and organic scientists in the UCN. Because of these factors, Vitis is both a tropical paradise that many may travel to for a vacation away from the struggles of artificial life, as well as the 'Bread Basket' of the UCN, their main economic contributions being thousands of different varieties of fruits, vegetables, roots, and greens. There are also thousands of exotic spices and edible flowers grown here, as well.

Stagnum

Warm, humid, and with very little dry land to be found, Stagnum has a stable temperature and an uncomplicated weather pattern, but still remains one of the least-inviting planets belonging to the United Chimerosu Nations (UCN). With one half of its surface covered by miles of thick freshwater marshes and swamps, and the other half covered by a gigantic brackish ocean, there isn't such a thing as salt water, although there is sweet and bitter water, depending on how much salt you happen to find dissolved in it. With the warm temperatures and constant presence of water, those not wearing some form of repellant when they arrive on Stagnum will find themselves being devoured by every sort of biting insect, none of which care what kind of creature they bite, so long as it has blood. Those who are not adapted to walking constantly in water and do not wear proper gear will find themselves experiencing severe foot pain by the end of the day, a precursor to any number of foot submersion syndromes, which are all health problems that result from too much water on the skin. In addition to the horrible assault of insects and the constant presence of water, are the always-present threats of dangerous predators that lurk in the water, concealed under thick layers of algae and mud, waiting for a victim to pass by. Indeed, among all the planets in the UCN, Stagnum is not merely uninviting, but completely menacing, for even the race who lives here is extremely secretive, and mistrustful of strangers.

From space, Stagnum is actually the only planet in its system, protected within a large asteroid belt which, thankfully, only encircles a certain area, making it possible to pass by without actually having to go through the belt itself. Stagnum orbits the red star Sinclair, and the only other interesting detail about the Sinclair system is that Stagnum has a pale white moon called Tenebris, an ironic title, as the name describes the exact opposite of what the moon looks like. Tenebris' moon creates tides in the water of Stagnum's oceans, and the water cycle always ensures that the water in the oceans and rivers flow in currents. This keeps water in certain open areas from being completely obscured by algae or bacterial growth that would make it cloudy, and also leaves small spaces where biting insects won't breed, but regardless, water should always be boiled before it is safe to drink.

Stagnum itself is clearly a swampy planet, with dark green foliage and thick beds of grass and mangroves leaving little room for any other color that might indicate a different kind of region. Roughly 80% water, and 20% land, one half of the planet is a dense swamp riddled with deltas and rivers that can be seen from space, but eventually grow smaller and smaller into streams, even less of this area is land than someone might be led to believe. The other half, the gigantic, brackish-water ocean, is mostly shallow, consisting of huge beds of grasses that shelter all sorts of small creatures, as well as clusters of drifting mangrove trees. All clusters that rise out of the water are surrounded by a thick radius of green algae, which is at times either avoided or sought out, depending in whatever 'zone' you happen to be in, although only the natives have any idea what these zones are, or where they're located. Most outsiders are typically confused by this, although much of the reasoning for the algae and the odd avoid/seek behavior involves different kinds of predators dominating various locations and sections.

Plant life on Stagnum is adapted to survival in warm, wet conditions. As a result, all plants that grow here are highly resistant to rotting, and are typically known for shallow, yet very extensive root systems. Around the single great ocean on the planet, trees, reeds, and all other kinds of flora are also more resistant to salty water. As a result, tree roots may grow up off the ground to form pointed 'knees', and then grow back down again, weaving themselves across a great area, and twining with other tree roots to form a powerful, thick weaving. Other trees have roots visible above water, forming cages, and sometimes, not being rooted in anything, instead forming drifting forests in the open area where they form. Carnivorous plants are extremely common on Stagnum, due to the partly-dry, muddy areas between tree roots having poor soil, due to not being directly touched by currents that carry rich silt, as well as for the high presence of insects, which serve as a readily-available food supply. These can include flytraps that grow to be the size of footballs, dew plants that are five feet tall, billions of flypaper-flowers that grow out of the sides of trees like predatory orchids, entire fields of serpentine traps, and pitcher plants that drape down like ornaments from the branches. Aside from all the other things that will feed on the gigantic population of insects and arachnids, the natives consider the plants to be the greatest regulators of the bugs on their world. They even claim that the swamp itself is predatory.

Animals on Stagnum, like the plants, are adapted to live in a wet, hostile environment filled with dangerous creatures and plants ready to make them their next meal. There are firstly many kinds of water birds, ones with webbed feet, buoyant bodies, and beaks shaped so that they can filter algae, plankton, and other small kinds of foods from the water. Waterproof feathers that secrete a strange-smelling oil are a must, an adaptation that will deter most bugs. Other creatures, such as giant frog-like amphibians, may possess baleen in their mouths. Filter-feeders largely make up the herbivorous population of creatures on the planet. Millions of insect species on Stagnum will drink nectar from flowers, or eat plants, but there are just as many, if not more predators in the world of bugs. Spiders that weave webs between trees form super-colonies of fifty spiders or more, some not even of the same species, and catch thousands of insects by working together to form their massive, silken kingdoms. Beetles and other water bugs that dive beneath the surface are not any safer, for the arachnids and predatory bugs will follow them, some coming up to meet them from silk bubbles filled with air. Millions of plant species feign innocence of harmless flora, but are actually sweet, baited traps that intend to digest the bugs later. Animals also eat the bugs, many kinds of mammals, reptiles, and especially birds have adapted to eating insects, either through swift flight, long, sticky tongues, or through the use of tools. However, this does not stop the fish, or the other creatures that require larger, more substantial meals. Apex predators are everywhere, and half the time, not seen until it is too late to escape them. Gigantic fishes that swim in the center of rivers, deeper waters, may possess gigantic teeth and lightning speed, and enormous reptiles and amphibians turned carnivore will lurk underwater in wait for the opportunity to strike. The only thing keeping larger creatures safe from these beasts is extreme caution, and knowledge of what kind of predator lives where. Sometimes algae beds can keep you safe, other times, they spell your death.

With its stable weather, yet threatening atmosphere and highly secretive and mistrustful natives, Stagnum is often not a great center of either diplomacy, trade, or tourism. It does, however, serve as one of the best places to conduct military survival training, in which UCN soldiers are taught how to use their natural abilities in the field to escape danger, as well as how to utilize their gear. These training camps are often kept very far from native settlements, however, in order to minimize complaints or protests by the Stagnumians. Most Stagnumian buildings and structures are built on elevated platforms above the water, and Stagnumians are well-known for their lethal natural prowess, and great skill in cultivating extremely sensitive plants. Some of the finest sculptors and artisans come from Stagnum, save for glassblowers and makers of mosaics and stained-glass windows, trades dominated by Cavernians. Stagnum, however, is famed for the intricate patterns that they design with, and textiles they design are of a fine quality. Weather on Stagnum always remains within the boundaries of either 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 98 degrees, and rain happens frequently in the afternoons, low-lying fog common during morning hours.

Frigian Chimerosu

Frigians are a species of Chimerosu adapted to living in the harsh conditions of the arctic planet Frigius. Naturally used to living in temperatures between -150 to -170 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as facing unpredictable weather, ferocious wildlife, and the constant struggle to find food, they are known for their incredible resistance to the cold, stamina, and physical strength. A large species, females range in height from 6'1" to 6'7", and males from 6'5" to 6'11", the measurement being taken from the front foot up to the tip of the horns, a comparison for size used by most bipedal species. Incredibly muscular, and possessing thicker feathers, they have a characteristically stockier appearance, and typically possess a deep rib cage and extremely powerful wings, two features that allow them to fly in strong winds. Unlike other Chimerosu species, Frigians lack scales on their talons and plating down their stomachs, instead both areas being covered by feathers, which allow insulation against the cold. Their hands and feet are comparable to bear claws, being large, with short, sharp talons that allow traction on ice and glaciers, normally slippery surfaces. Their skin is typically a dark grey-black color, and their beak-slits are downward-sloped, allowing water to be conserved when they breathe. They have slight amounts of leathery padding on their skulls, and their thick, powerful horns suggest that they use their natural abilities to fend off predators and find food. This is indicated by most older males of the species, who typically have large scars on their faces. Frigians possess the deep blue eyes found among most species, and Frigians are typically pure white in coloration, with faint blue stripes.

Frigian Chimerosu society places incredible emphasis on being self-sufficient and environmentally friendly, a characteristic that seems to be shared by all other UCN worlds. It also heavily supports good education, a strong work ethic, and the value of bravery, honesty, and hospitality. As a result, a large number of Frigians are dedicated engineers, machine operators, and researchers. The population that does not work with machinery consists of skilled farmers, seaweed gatherers, and fishermen. Because the community on the planet heavily supports individuality, as well as the roles of each worker, there are relatively few incidences of skilled workers mistreating those that are not skilled. This is because value is placed on all skills and talents, regardless if they serve a different purpose. Often, unskilled workers such as farmers and seaweed gatherers hold as just as much, if not more respect in their position than high-ranking engineers, due to the incredible risks and dangers posed by their occupations. Although engineers are at risk around certain forms of machinery, gatherers and fishermen alike are known for traveling extremely long distances over glaciers, even in bad weather, to find food. In addition, they must be prepared to deal with dangerous landscapes, and the risk of predators attacking them. This danger is further worsened by the lack of medical facilities in the areas where they work, as those who are severely injured cannot get help. All Frigians must be strong physically, and capable of defending themselves, as those that are not, and happen to wander away from a group are likely to be killed by wild animals.

Stagnumian Chimerosu

Stagnumians are a species of Chimerosu adapted to living on the swamp planet Stagnum. Dark and mysterious, with a strong suspicion of strangers, few of them are seen away from their home world, or are willing to negotiate with other races that are not other species of Chimerosu. Like the original Krylonians, females average in height around 5'2", and males average around 5'8". Because of the large presence of water on their planet, Stagnumians have adapted webbed feet and hands, though the hind digits on each foot, as well as the thumbs, are not attached to the rest of the webbing, allowing more flexibility for a variety of tasks. Because their omnivorous diet consists of algae and plankton, as well as a variety of fish and other animals, they have adapted to obtain food with ease. Waterproof feathers, aided by small tooth-like ridges on the inner part of the beak, allow them to easily wade in water for hours without negative effects, and filter-feed. The tips of their beaks are hooked slightly, and their long, curved, razor-sharp talons are regarded as the largest of all Chimerosu species. Their feathers have fringes around the edges that completely muffle all sounds produced by flight, allowing them to descend on prey without being detected. The combination of these abilities ranks Stagnumians among the best hunters, and their precise nature results in a high rate of success. Stagnumians typically have black or grey beaks, scales, and horns, and all possess blue eyes typical of Chimerosu species. They are marked by their black plumage, which has a blue iridescence that is stronger where they had once possessed stripes. They are also known for their faint, acidic smell, the result of a compound in the oil coating their feathers, which repels biting insects.

Relatively little is known about Stagnumian society, as few ever get to observe it without the Stagnumians modifying their typical behavior and mannerisms in the presence of others. What accurate information is given is provided by the few members of the species willing to share information about themselves with other races. Because much of the planet is covered by water, Stagnumians traditionally build their homes on elevated platforms, or on large, expansive root systems formed by the trees, which can be rather large, and strong enough to support heavy structures. With a strong spiritual view towards the swamps of their planet, they heavily dislike alien races trying to build structures or integrate into their society, as they feel that they are invaders that may harm Stagnum's ecosystem. They will, however, grudgingly tolerate other Chimerosu species, as they are close relatives. Other Chimerosu build military camps on Stagnum, because the planet's ecosystem is so dangerous, and perfect for survival training. These structures are often kept far from native settlements, however, at the request of the Stagnumians. An artistic people, Stagnumians are often craftsmen, and everything they do is of the finest quality. Their pottery is very strong and durable, and lasts a long time. Any plant that is fragile and delicate, they are capable of keeping alive. Their paintings and illustrations are done on special canvases that can resist water, and there is an expansive number of natural colors that they can extract from plants to make ink, paint, and dye. What Stagnumians are truly talented at, however, is raising spiders to adulthood, breeding them, and then using their silk to make a shiny cloth that is stronger than steel, fire-retardant, water-repellant, and yet as soft as a chick's down. Any cloth made by a Stagnumian is regarded as a precious luxury, and Stagnumian cloth can only be identified by putting water on it. If it soaks into the silk, then it is fake, but if the water droplets bead up and roll away, as though the fabric were leather, then it is authentic.
