A Chatbox Survival Guide

"Thoust bewareth the chatbox, wherefor there be demons," -- The Book of RG

The chatbox is the brain of RG. It is where most discussion actually occurs. It is often where we develop most of our ideas and plot concepts. It is where we exchange ideas and communicate with our fellow writers. Now before I go on, let me clarify that you are not required to use the chatbox, but it is preferred that you do. The chatbox is our most efficient way of communication with one another. So first let's talk about how to use the chatbox.

How to use the Chatbox

How to enter - to use the chatbox, locate the big box at the bottom of the home page. The words "log in" are located in the top right corner. Click that to log in. You will immediately see the conversation open up to you. You will see "(your username) has joined the chat (date)" in bolded green text. The words in the top right corner have now changed to "log out". Click that to leave the chatbox.

Who is online? - You can see who is also in the chat by observing the bar to the side of the box. It will show who is "online" and who is "away".

"Away" - If you don't post for a specified amount of time (usually about five minutes) you will be put into the "away" mode. To get out of this mode, post again. If you continue to remain inactive for another five minutes the chatbox will automatically log you out.

Messages - Easy. There's a bar on the bottom you can type in. Click "send" or press enter to post. To colorize your text you click the button with the "A" on it. To post a smiley press the smiley button to open the selection. To bolden, italicize, underline, or add strikes to your text click their designated buttons next to the bar. To add links you can simply copy/paste the url. Bbcode is not needed in the chatbox, however it can still be used. Please do not post large pictures or gifs in the chatbox as it lags the chat. Please post the URLs instead.

Archives - to view previous discussions, click the "Archives" button in the top right corner next to "Log out". But BEWARE, there are spooky things in the archives.

Interaction & Behavior

The chatbox is extremely laid back as far as behavior goes. We are very lenient and let you have more liberties there than you naturally would elsewhere in the forum. Firstly, let's talk about the four types of discussions that we have there.

Normal Discussion - just a general topic.
Story Discussion - this is when we discuss our ideas for stories and the RP. These are our highest priority discussions and should not be interrupted.
Debate - on rare occasion a few members may politely and respectfully debate about politics. A few members who share the same religion will discuss religion. These are delicate discussions I will address more in a moment.
Derpversations - these conversations are hellish and destroy the uttermost intelligence of innocent nations. They are haunts of chaos and drown the weak and the weary in miles of shadowy, unforgiving, merciless derp. These conversations are an accepted part of the chatbox life, and are our way of achieving comical relief from all other topics. Now remember: they are the lowest priority.

Behavior
We allow some things in the chatbox that we don't allow anywhere else. One of those things is excessive profanity. Yes, we allow cursing and even sexual innuendo in the chatbox. However, the people who use it are obligated to respect the differences of other people and will not use profanity if it makes someone else uncomfortable. Often times profanity is just shared between one or two friends when they are alone in the chatbox and therefore not hurting anyone. During derpversations, sarcasm and playful teasing. Sometimes these get out of hand and cause arguments, but about 90% they are recognized as jokes.

The basic rule of thumb while using the chatbox: have a sense of humor. A lot of members of RG come here to relieve themselves of stress from everyday life. RG provides not just cool science fiction, but also comedy in the form of friends sharing luls. So please don't harsh on anyone's fun. Wink

Now sometimes we have mutual debates in the chatbox about politics, religion, science, etc. Please note: these are usually carried about by people who are close friends or have the same viewpoint so that we avoid arguments and harassment. Do not harass people. If you believe you are being harassed or mistreated, contact an administrator immediately.

Arguments
Here's a simple word of advice: if an argument occurs, leave the chatbox immediately. Then, contact a moderator.

Staff Chat
From time to time staff members may use the chat for quick, confidential discussions which are mod-business only. This is a very, very rare thing. But when it happens, you will be asked to leave the chatbox. If you do not leave, you will be kicked. If you reenter, you will be banned (not from the forum, but from the chatbox). When the discussion is over a mod will post in the general chat thread inviting everyone back.

Clearings
Chat mods have the capability to erase all the messages in the chatbox. Often times the only time we clear the chat is if the conversation contains the following:

• Profanity
• Heated arguments
• Videos, pics, etc that lag the chat
• Story discussion/spoilers
• Staff discussion

You may also request the chat to be cleared for whatever you like. Unless there is information in the archives which someone else needs, a mod will normally clear it for you. Note: admins' archives go up farther than everyone else'.

Kicks
Kicks are often issued to people who disrupt discussion, are acting in ways that annoy others, or otherwise deserve one for some other reason. We occasionally give out prank-kicks but that is often just between mods and the mods do not abuse their kick power over users. (The only mods known to really do this are Zaroas, Whoster, and Darkel to one another). Kicks are also used as warnings to people who do the above annoyances. Continuation of those annoyance can end up in a ban.

Bans
A ban will only occur when you truly break our rules or give us a viable reason for doing so. If you are nice, have a sense of humor, and generally have respect for others, we should get along just fine. Very Happy

Chatbox Commands
/help Display a summary of the Chatox commands with the whole explanations.

/me In the beginning of a sentence, this command will be replaced by your username (ex: /me eats a delicious pizza" will display "Nickname eats a delicious pizza")

/exit Disconnect from the Chatbox. You can also give a reason that will be visible for all members connected (ex: /exit reason)

/abs Send a message noticing that you're absent. You can add a reason that will be displayed in the message and visible by all members connected to the Chatbox (ex: /abs reason). Please note that the command /away does the same.
